I received my lab result's and my Glucose was 146. But that was just regular fasting and blood drawn. Endo wants me to do a glocose tolerance test. But I need to call and schedule it. He also wants a HbA1c test done. Anyone know what this is? I would appreciate any insite, I called the office but they had me on hold forever and I am at work So I am calling later. BUT the curiosity is killing me, so I need some opinions.
Nicole

Nicole ~ A regular fasting blood sugar is just what your sugar happens to be at that moment in time. Non diabetic should be 120 or under so that is a high #. A Hemoglobin A1c is the average of your blood sugars over the past 3 months and is a very good indicator if you have diabetes of not. The glucose tolerance test (GTT) is one that checks your sugars in a controlled environment. They take blood before you drink the soda and then every hour for 3 hours and they already know how much sugar is in it so they can see how your body insulin will respond and they can tell more about your insulin levels.

Nicole ~ I'm sorry. I know you could have done without getting that voice mail for sure. I felt the same exact way. I called my mom bawling that I could never eat sugar again. After some diet counseling and met/avandia combo mine really isn't that bad. I mean I am still not happy to have it but it is manageable. Try to get the freestyle flash monitor if you have a choice. It is a meter that you can check your #'s on your arm instead of the tip of you finger and it is the bomb!! You can hardly even feel it there. I will never go back to sticking my finger again. Hang in there girl. I know it sucks and it's not fun but it is doable. Let me know if I can help you in any way.
((((HUGS))))

Nicole, I feel your pain! I am also a recently diagnosed diabetic, along with the PCOS, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, hypertension, etc, etc, etc... Keep your chin up. It seems scary at first, but with proper education and nutrition things will be ok!!! *hugs*

Nicole ~ I forgot to tell you that I was soooo sick when I was diagonsed. We were ttc so I kept thinking I was pg but the tests kept being neg. This was before I knew I had diabetes or pcos. After I ate I would throw up and I felt horrible and tired all the time. I had to pee ALL the time so of course that meant I HAD to be pg. I flipped out when they told me I had to quit ttc til I got it under control. My A1c was 13 which is sky high. With the meds combo I am on my last one was 5.4 and I definitely don't eat diabetic all the time. I try to like 80% of the time and watch my carbs but I do fall of the wagon big time sometimes. I cannot say no to pecan pie and I LOVE margaritas with TexMex. On the Border has started selling low carb tortillas with their fajitas. I found a low carb recipe for margaritas and my blood sugar stays normal after I drink one (or 2). You do go through kind of a grieving process with all of the emotions ~ shock, denial, anger....
Lovey ~ How are you doing since your diagnosis?

Thank you for asking about me I'm doing ok for the most part. When I was first diagnosed, I was in shock. Not that I really should've been. I've been heading towards diabetes for a long time. I'm still trying to get my eating under control, and trying to exercise more. Even though I know eating healthier is the right thing to do, I still eat way too much crappy foods. I don't seem to have any motivation. I've lost a little bit of weight, but I think that's due more to the meds (phentermine and metformin) than anything. I know once I get into a routine I'll be fine, but getting there is the hard part! My case is really quite mild, thankfully. When I was diagnosed, my fasting blood sugar was 134, and my AC1 was 6.3. It could be tons worse. I just want to get myself under control before things go really haywire!!! How long have you been diabetic???
*hugs*,
Anne

Lovey ~ I was diagnosed about7 yrs ago. I was shocked b/c we have no family history at all so I was never concerned about anything like that. Of course once I was dx with pcos everything became very clear as to how I got it. Your FBS and A1c are not that bad at all. That is about where I was most of the time until las Oct when I saw a new AWESOME endo. He put me on 2000mg met a day. I was on glucotrol (some met/some glib) and I got bad lows right before lunch. I mean like 40s and 50s. He upped my avandia to 8mg per day. I was on 4. Now things are sooo much better with this combo. My fbs is usu 100-120 and during the day they are all under 100. I usu try to eat low carb during the day. And then around 120 at bedtime. When I am working out at Curves regularly they are even better. And I am by no means a healthy eater. I have just tried to limit my carbs and take in a few more veggies. I also like sugar free jello cups with a dollop of coolwhip. The one thing I did cut out was candy. I LOVE candy. Like skittles, starburst, jolly ranchers and anything chocolate. I just try to not even go there b/c I don't have good self control when it comes to that. Also potato chips. I try to buy dh kinds that I don't like. I LOVE doritos and I don't even bring them into the house b/c I can't eat just one. I can handle a piece of cake but when it comes to those little candies in my mind I am not finished til they are all gone. I also switched to low carb bread or tortillas. Just little changes that will hopefully add up in the end. I have lost almost 20lbs recently and that has helped I'm sure but now I have to maintain it. I really need to lose about 20 more but I would like to maintain this a little before I jump back in for more.

Well I have those emotions and its really depressing. I hate the fact that I cant eat like normal people. Everything I put in my mouth is a decision....should I eat this ...should I not....should I only eat half? And so on......it's just really unfair. I told my parents and my DH but they were just like "Oh Really"... So I guess I am going inot this alone.....well not alone because THANK GOD for this board and all the people here that just offer support and words of constant encouragement.
So I am getting my results via the mail because I want to see them on my own not have some stranger read to me over the phone.
Thanks again guys!!!!
Nicole

How is the start of your long (hopefully) weekends going? Great, I hope! Sherry, I hear you about the shock. Even though I get diabetes from both sides of my family, I was still shocked. Maybe in denial? Even now I think I still am... I shouldn't be, but I am... That's great that you've found a good endo. I have too. I'm going to a place that deals specficially with diabetes, PCOS (how cool is that?), obesity and some other stuff as well. I work with a team of endos and a certain dietician who I really like. They are super supportive, understanding and caring. It seems sometimes that doctors can forget you're a real person with problems, not just a paycheck!!!
I hear you about the food. I'm not so much a candy eater (as in I don't usually just go out and buy some unless I'm in the mood.) I'm in love with ice cream, and pop, especially root beer, which is probably one of the worst kinds of pop out there... And then sometimes it's pretzels/tortilla chips/crackers/etc... I guess I kind of go in spurts with what I'm craving. I just know that I don't crave the good stuff very often. I wish I did!
And Nicole, I understand about the emotions. Right after I was first diagnosed, my dbf and I went to Sam's Club to pick up a couple of things, and I kept thinking to myself as I walked past "bad" foods, "I can no longer eat that.." "That's bad for me.", etc. I was completely in a daze, wandering around, thinking these forlorn thoughts... Even now, a couple months later, I still wonder how I let it get so out of hand. Things will get easier though. You'll learn the things that your body reacts well to, and the stuff it doesn't.
I'm thinking about seeing a therapist about my food issues and my health. I think it could be really helpful in getting my motivation where it needs to be, and learning why I'm making the choices I'm making.
Anyhoo, I'm rambling, so I'm going to take off, and go to sleep!!! I'm very very (I'm in love with these little icons!! Soooo cute! You ladies have a fantasic night, and I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for listening, and chatting with me. It's nice to connect with women on this board!
*hugs*,
Anne

Nicole ~ The hA1C looks great!! 4.8 is an excellent #. My last one was 5.4 and that is the lowest it has been since I was diagnosed. FBS is a tad bit high. Should always be below 120 from what I remember. I have no experience with the results of the GTT though. Did you let dh know that you have to cut back on that kind of stuff? It took my dh awhile to get it. I still have to slip some sugar free stuff in on him on the sly. It's like if he knows it's sugar free he just knows he won't like it. Drives me crazy!! But I'm not makin 2 of the same dessert one sugar free and one regular so he just has to deal with it.
