I think it would be interesting to hear what people are here for? Why did you come here in the first place? What would you like to get from this board that you're not getting at the moment?
Just for info and perhaps to help with understanding each other.
thanks for the pm. I did try and pm you back - but your box is full at the moment
when i first came to sc (back in 2001) i was looking for some help/understanding of what this 'new thing' was that had been dx with -
as the years have gone on, i come here still to learn about pcos, to try and support others as i have always been supported / and to be supported as well
and to meet my many friends. Hope this makes sence, i am wayy tired right now.

Well it looked like an interesting place when I joined in 2005, although before I joined I was browsing the forums for useful advice which I found for a couple of years before.
Since joining, I have made some good friends, some I am still in touch with others, others not so much.
I mainly browse the Diabetes forums and the Depression side of things because frankly that is where I find the most support which I might add comes from people in the USA mainly.
I’ve not been as active this year as I have in the past, maybe because my head is tied up in other things but also partly because I have found the place to become tiresome, especially the UK section of the board {and that is in no way aimed at anyone in particular!}.
PCOS in all honesty doesn’t bother me anymore, I have it I live with so well and good. I don’t plan on kids at the moment so it’s not like I need all the TTC stuff but it’s still nice to see others have success and read there stories – because let’s face it you never know what will change in the future!
I originally wanted some help and advice on PCOS and to know there were people in the same position as me.
I have made some great friends here, but the board seems to go from one extreme to another, either talking about mundane crap to having full out war.
Does anyone remember when we had discussion about our lives and where people actually had some great personal imput and there weren't any mass fall outs, I do but it seems such a long way away.
I feel this should be as if we all met up for a cyber coffee and a chat. A least this coffee shop i can get my buggie into!

I was diagnosed years ago when there was no information out there for women. So I came to find out more about the medical side. And then I wanted to lose 40lb in 2005, so used the Diet and Exercise board constantly, as there was a good group of people on there with lots of support and info.
I guess what you want from a forum depends on the point in your own journey when you joined it. At the point I was really madly focused on dealing with the weight and health issues, the UK forum was fairly inactive on that side, so I used a UK forum on another US weightloss site, for the informal chat. I'm also active on a couple of my hobby forums and a small, closely knit UK pagan site where the support and fellowship is so strong I tend not to need it from other parts of the interweb! Again, it's probably happy accident - where you stray first. I been online for 10 years now, so I already had old familiar places long before I found SC.
My other haunts here were the Alternative and Spiritual boards as I decided to take an holistic approach using no medications, and found the Alternative board full of solid, practical info that did indeed help me shed the 40lb I came here to get shut of. I have a nice thread going on the spirituality board and I enjoy reading about other people's belief systems especially as most of my online time is spent on a pagan board where non pagans don't last long. Also cos I'm a Reiki practitioner, so it's one of my interests.
So I come specifically to the UK forum for:
1. Idle gossip
2. Info about latest UK research/relevant issues in the news
3. A sense of fellowship.
4. A UK specific atmosphere.
I don't particularly want support but then I'm probably one of the oldest here and my weight loss site has quite a few women my age so would be more likely to find it there!
In other words, what we want from this forum probably depends on lots of variables like age, how long you've been diagnosed, how active you are elsewhere on the interweb, what stage you are in the PCOS journey.
I don't think it matters people want different things, because you can have different threads for different people. If something doesn't interest me, I tend not to click on it!

I have made some great friends here, but the board seems to go from one extreme to another, either talking about mundane crap to having full out war.
I don’t think there are any full out wars on the boards perhaps a slight exaggeration there! Yes there are people who disagree with others but I think you get that anywhere in the internet world especially on public forums. I think each and every forum I have used I’ve witnessed problems and people disagreeing and others taking sides with there friends.
It’s just happened over at the PCOS site Verity, it was so pathetic that half the people there vowed to leave and not come back and another identical site was created in a few hours. It put me off the forum so I quit as moderator along with several others. I don’t even bother with the place now. In fact I’ve must have quit about 6 public forums this year alone because of arguments on boards and little clique of people! One in particular has been ruined because of a bunch of girls who talk on the boards between themselves but ignore every other thread, topic or post from others. They may as well just create there own board for them and no one else!
I may not always agree with stuff Pollysis says and to some extent I can be *****y back but it doesn’t mean I don’t accept she has her own opinion even if I might not agree with it! At the same time I’ve found some of her posts quite useful! She’s just one example but off the top of my head she’s the only person I can think of who I’ve perhaps not agreed with on the forum!
I have to agree with every one else !! it first started out as a need for information about the best way to tackle my PCOS, it has now progressed into friendship and like Pollysis said idle gossip !!! LOL
The whole forum has some thing to offer for each of us from parenting to dieting etc .... I think that the UK side is great !! some times it does slow down with little going on but it soon picks up again, its fab when we can chat, show pictures, post silly threads and even have a heated debates !!!
So I am here to help others and be helped myself !! because we are all linked together through one common problem PCOS !!
sarah thats a good response
we arnt all going to agree with each other all the time are we.
its normal to have arguements and disagreements but all in all they will sort thermselfs out. I have met wonderful people on here and my best yet was meeting nyk for the first time .

awww thanks Jess
Yes I think the main reason I use these forums is to speak with people who have experiences similar things to me - that ranges from painful periods, to depression, to trying to concieve, to pregnancy, motherhood, and beyond!
I have made some wonderful friendships too - whether they be just over the internet (many of my friends are state side - my best friend {whom I met through SC} lives in Canada and we have never met yet I can reply on her for anything!) and the UK board has enabled me to meet some of you in person (in particular Jess, Calla, Helen, Becky and Emma).
And I have found that I can chat about other things on this board too - not just about PCOS...
You are going to get disagreements wherever you go... I've come to learn to get over it and to ignore where I don't want to read...yet sometimes I"m still tempted to put in my opinion also. { think I started a mini war on here a fwe months back over a post in the 'rant' section!}
I do find comfort in this board not just through the friendships I"ve made but also knowing that there is always somebody out there who knows soemthing who has experienced something or can give you some ideas on something...I never feel alone.
The two boards I use most on this site are the mommy board and the uk board.... probably because I have 'friends' on these boards...but when I have time I also make sure I frequent the other boards which interest me to see if there is any other information etc which may help me.
so we pretty much use the forum for different reasons
i also love lurkin on the mother board as i have a godson and babysit 3 children and have baby cousin so its nice to pick up tips etc.

As others have said, i initially came to the site to get information as i found it lacking elsewhere. It's really good to get other peoples perspective and experiences of the medical profession whether it be in another part of the country or in another country.
To be honest i come to the UK board just to "keep up" and like the eclectic mix of posts which can range from the mundae to the poignant.
The greatest advantage of the site over real life is that if someone says something i really disagree with or makes me angry, i can just stop reading it. Lifes too short

I came to this board to find out info about PCOS. The knowledge learnt from this board has helped me no end, undoubtedly.
On this specific section of the board I like:
to hear others experiences of PCOS
to hear each others highs and lows
to see how the treatment we are getting is similar/different
I always think information is power, so the more information you have on the condition, then the closer you are to helping yourself.
I LOVE a good debate on here, I really dont like it when people take a debate personally. Our opinions can disagree on certain aspects, but it dosn't mean the others opinions are wrong, or we should discount their point of view. I think the debates on here are the most read threads, and they keep the boards alive and fresh.
What I cant stand about this section of the boards is:
(bearing in mind this is my personal opinion so nobody take it personally) when used so often they become insincere IMO
People responding to threads with nothing to add
I will admit I have become bored with these boards. I do love a bit of drama and something to make it a bit interesting and this place (and I mean the whole of SC) has imo become a different place in the last 6 months or so.

Just wondering but what are you thoughts on the board Paddy.... I should imagine you don't get as much time to be around now with two little ones to care for and I am certan you would prefer spending time with them that us lot!

You're right! I get precious little time online now, in fact this is the first time I've been on since I posted the opening post last night! It's a good thing, I'm not complaining.
I pretty much agree with what everyone has said. I've been on this particular board for....oooooohhhhh.....almost four years. I came here heartbroken with a diagnosis I didn't understand and a desperation to become a mother. I found invaluable information, great support and made great friends. I will always owe the people at sc for getting me through some of the toughest times of my life. On the Mommy board I have made some fantastic friends with the people who had kids at the same time as me...we're all still close and in contact, just not on this board (sadly). In my quest to conceive the first time I used the diet and exercise board alot and of course the ttc section. Occasionally, if I have time, I'll duck into the rant section for a nose about. But back to the UK board...
I come here at the moment, mainly to see what's going on with everyone. I love a fairytale ending and so I keep up with those who are trying to conceive and those who are preggers - Owlie's baby is coming really soon now!!! Yippee. I try to offer advice based on my experiences. I don't have much time and admit that I'm selective in the threads I engage with - gone are the days when I trawled the boards and responded to every thread! I don't mean to favour anyone in particular, I just read what interests me from the title.
I like keeping up with development on the health side, debating topics and examining view points. I enjoy challenging discussion. I don't take anything or mean anything personally, it's not the way I operate.
What do I want from here...
A sense of fellowship (like Polly)
Information
To learn from the experience of others
To hear about developments in treatments etc
To keep up with people I've been chatting to for years
I hope that makes sense. I'm tired and in agony (really hurt my shoulder today! )
