Question What does Acanthosis Nigricans look like....

when it's first starting? I have a fair amount of it in my groin, but it has always been there, so I don't know what it looked like when I was starting to get it. Now I've got something under my left breast. It's tan in colour, occassionally red, and it's all splotchy. I've had it for about a year, and it doesn't seem to be getting any darker. At first I thought it just might be some sort of sweat rash or soemthing, though it doesn't itch at all, so I showed the Dr when I first noticed it, and she gave me some cream, but that and everything else I've tried won't get it go to away. Then I found out about Acanthosis Nigricans through reading this board, and I started wondering if that might be it. I would show it to my GP, but I don't think she actually knows much about AN to know whether it is or not.

So, what does AN look like when you're first starting to get it? Does it just go dark straight away, or does it start out looking like a rash? I've tried googling it to see if I can find somewhere that describes what it looks like when it starts, but didn't get anywhere.

Hmmm...good question. Im not sure I really remember. I just remember thinking I just had a tan on my neck! It starts getting rough (on the neck anyway, thats all I know about), there are deep lines and it just gets darker and darker. Splotchy, to me, doesnt sound like A/N. It could just be from skin rubbing together? I get that on my groin area sometimes, just from skin rubbing together or from heat---and ESPECIALLY when I 'groom' down there on the sides. Gets very itchy and red and as you say 'splotchy'!

Mine never started as a rash. It started as a tannish pigment. I have the tan spots in the groin area, slightly under my breasts, under my arms, and on the back of my neck.

I’ve had it there for years, but the spots under my arms and on the back of my neck are different from the groin and breast areas. They in addition to having the darker pigment have the thickened skin with ridges (caused from insulin "spillover" into the skin which activates insulin receptors in the skin and forces it to grow abnormally.)

Do you have the spots under your arms or on the back of your neck, too? If you do, then the tan under the breasts is very likely AN. The rash part could be something different. I tend to get irritated in that area at times due to my bra rubbing - especially in the summer.

Here are a couple of pictures of AN:

Thanks for your replies

I don't have it on my neck or armpits, just in my groin area and it looks like those pics you posted Heather. The bit under my boob though does look like it's thicker skin and it does have the ridges in it, you can see them and feel them when you run your fingers over it, that's what got me thinking that it might be AN. It goes in a line from the middle of my chest to right under my left breast, and then it has spots of colour around it as well. A bit like as if someone was trying to squirt paint in a line but it splashed the surrounding areas.
