It means without a doubt he is hypothyroid. Anything above 1.5 is suspect, anything above 3 is clinically hypo according to the AACE and anything above 2.xx for me is zombie-time.

Anyway it means he should be thoroughly tested and put on thyroid medication right away.

My sister in law told me her husbands T3 and T4 are fine but his TSH are 34...and you say he is Hypothyroid? Ok I'll let her know. He is bleeding real bad and his liver is fatty. So they took him off his panic attacks medicine(don't know which one it is called),his Synthroid-he was on it but didn't help me and whatever meds he was on.

Thanks :0)

If his TSH if high but his T4 and T3 are normal, that just means his body is having too work very hard to make the right amount of thyroid hormone. Your TSH is like a thermostat - when natural thyroid levels are too low, it goes up, and vice versa. If he's left untreated, the T4 and T3 will surely fall eventually. They will probably want to start him on synthetic hormones right away, though, so his body doesn't have to work quite so hard. Tell them not to worry, this is very treatable. Good luck to him!
