Default What does it take to adopt?

Okay right now we are still TTC... but we want to adopt... even if we do or do not have our own child we still want to adopt! So as it stands right now... we have been married for a little over a year, and are in major debt... we both brought debt into the marriage. Dh has a stable job, I on the other hand, am still looking, currently working but dont want to be at the job. We rent an apartment. We really havent discussed adoption except the fact that we are both willing to adopt a child, but are waiting. Yeah we wont be adopting for I would say at least 5 years is when we will start looking into it hard core. That gives us 5 years to get ready for whatever we have to do to be able to adopt.

I guess what I am asking is... where do we need to be in our life to adopt. Do they require no debt, or do they require you to own or be purchasing your own home. Stable with a consistant job record.. I dont know.. and I dont know where to look... all I know is I want to be prepared so that when we wake up and say we are ready to look further into it... we can and not have to get certain things out of the way!

I dont know if he is going to want to adopt domestically or internationally... for me it doesnt matter! I just want to be ready for it!

I dont know if you ladies can point me in the direction of a few good websites or maybe suggest a few good books...

Thanks

My favorite websites:

the How to Adopt section at:
www.nacac.org/
(if I were you I would just print out that whole section. it's written excellently.)

the Meet the Children section at:
www.adoptuskids.org/
(the majority of the kids there are over 5)

and also you should probably see:
www.nwae.org
(they have had more younger children added there just recently)

... there are many more... do a search!

You do need to be somewhat stable in that you need to be able to prove you can support a child on your budget, but a certain amount of debt and not being a homeowner should NOT be seen as problems at all, don't let that keep you from starting the process when you're ready.

Keep researching, both online and at the bookstore, so you can decide what type of adoption is right for you!

Good luck.
