Hi all! I was just diagnosed in November of 2007 and my gynecologist immediately put me on Metformin (500mg./once daily). He never once tested me for IR or anything...he just did an ultrasound and I have "polycystic ovaries." Also, I have extremely irregular cycles (of course!)
Anyways, I have an appointment next week with a Reproductive Endocrinologist and I was just curious what exactly goes on at an appointment. I am just curious so thank you so much for any comments! I appreciate it!
Just a quick question:
Will an endo. order for an oral glucose test? I have lean pcos and my family doctor almost laughed at me in my face when I once asked her if I could have insulin problems. She did a quick test then (where they pinch your finger for blood) but although the value was a bit high she said it was nothing. Today I went to see her again and asked her if she would sent me to an endo. I brought up the oral glucose test again but she didn't really react to that. So will an endo look at that too or should I ask her once more but more persistent? Also, can a 'normal' endo do just as much for you as a reproductive endo?, I'm going to see just a regular one.
I just phoned to make an appointment with an endocrinologist but the woman on the phone wasn't exactly what you'd call helpful so I'm asking my cysters: Should you be off BCP when you visit an endo? I imagine if he/she wants to test my bloodwork I should be off it. I'd like to know asap because my appointment is next month and if I can keep taking BCP I will start a new strip tonight and otherwise I won't. Please, someone reply soon!
Your best bet is to talk to the office staff before hand so they can give you a general idea of what to expect. It may also help to do this in case you have to have not eaten for a certain # of hours prior to blood work they may expect to do.
During my first appointment with my RE I was surprised to note that I met with her in her office and had a discussion before she did any testing, took and blood or did any invasive ultrasounds. I felt like she was treating me like and intelligent person and as someone that she would listen to and involve in the process of formulating a plan of action.
Good luck and I hope your RE is similar to mine. I just adore her.
