I have an appt with a new GYN tomorrow and I'm going so that I can talk to her about trying to conceive. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what might happen at my appt tomorrow?! I don't know why but I am very very nervous! I realize that all appts are different, but if anyone can give me any ideas at all of what to expect, I would really really appreciate it! I think I just need to have an idea because it would help to calm my nerves! I hate not knowing.
Thanks!

I don't have any advice. But just wanted to wish you luck. It'll go fine. Good luck on TTC. My first appt. like that is next month. So I understand your nerves.
Let us know how it goes.
Are you going to start Clomid?

Since it's your first appointment with the gyn, they will ask how long you've been trying to conceive. Most doctors will not help unless it's been at least a year that you've been trying with no success. So, if it's been less then a year for you, and you don't want to wait, just tell them it's been a year. They will give you precriptions to have several tests done. (1) blood work, (2) hsg (checks to make sure your tubes are open) and (3) your husband will have to have a sperm anaysis done. Your gyno will probably also do an internal (no pap) just to make sure everything is ok also. If all the tests come out normal, then they will probably start you on Clomid. If you have any questions, feel free to IM me. Good luck.

I just wanted to wish you well for the dr. visit! I see a family dr. for my PCOS so I don't know what to expect from a gyn. I have been seeing the same dr. since my diagnosis, so I don't know that I ever had a specific trying to conceive visit. But I probably talked about it at every visit! My first visit with him was lots of talking (my medical history, especially my periods, hair loss, weight gain, etc.) I did have some bloodwork done but due to my symptoms he started me on met right away, even before the blood tests came back. He did a physical (pelvic exam and a pap too since I was overdue for that). I had to have a pelvic ultrasound at a later visit. I understand the nervous feeling, I have a BIG doctor phobia! I am already nervous about my annual exam next week (even though it's my usual dr. who will be doing it!)
Hopefully you will feel comfortable with this dr. and will get the help you need as you ttc! Good luck,
Jenny

Hi! Thank you guys for responding. I was suppose to have my appt yesterday, and we drove the 90 miles to get there, and when I got to the desk, they said they tried to call me and my GYN had gone home sick, so I had to reschedule my appt for Sept 7! AHHHH!!!!!! Great, more time for me to freak out about this!
Ok, a couple more questions, what is hsg? Second, I am figuring that bloodwork would probably be involved, and so I'm wondering if it's a good idea to plan to fast the night before just in case they want fasting bloodwork?
Seriously you guys, thank you for responding to my post! You helped to calm my nerves. You are the best!

I'm so sorry you drove the whole way there to find out they cancelled. That's a b****! Don't worry, there's really no need to worry about your consultation. I know it's hard not to. I was worried before mine, too. Call them and ask if you should fast if they want to do fasting blood work. Different doctors do it differently. My doctor (also a bit of a drive from home) sent me to a lab that's close to where I live to have the blood work done. But, I've heard other people say they had it done at their doctor's office. So, you should call and ask. Other then that, at the consult you'll basically just talk mostly about your medical history, have an internal and probably an ultrasound (vaginal) which does not hurt at all. Seriously! HSG is an outpatient procedure where they insert a catheter with a very tiny tube and inject a dye into your fallopian tubes and take X-ray pics to see if the dye flows out of the tubes. This is to determine if you have blocked tubes (if the dye does not flow out) or if they are open. As long as they are open, you should be able to release an egg once they get you ovulating again. Good luck.

Carrie, does the hsg hurt? do they put you under or something for it?
Thanks for responding to this, seriously! You can't imagine what a great help you are being!

Manders,
My doc did not put me under for it. I've only heard one woman say she went under for it, but they were doing some additional surgery or something at the same time. My gyno (unfortunately) only advised me to take an over the counter pain killer like Advil an hour before my appointment time. I won't lie to you, it hurt like I've never felt pain before in my life. But, it is a VERY short procedure. The entire procedure only takes about 10-15 min's tops (that's including undressing, getting up on the table, small chat w/ doc, etc). The actual pain (injection of the dye) was probably about 5 minutes. You can go home as soon as your done. It's an outpatient procedure. You basically have cramps the rest of the day (like your period), but then your fine. Most of the women I've spoken to said their docs gave them a prescription pain killer to take before the procedure. I'd demand it. If I had to do it again, I would. It is well worth it in the end run. And again, we're only talking about 1 day of feeling uncomfortable (and a few minutes of pain) compared to the long term benefits (peace of mind knowing your tubes are open, ok to start ttc, etc.) of having it done. Good luck.

The hardest thing for me to remember is all of my questions. I write them down and take them with me. I also have my hubby look them over if he is not going with me.

Wow, I never realized what a HSG was either.
sweetums-Did they say you have to have that procedure?
90 miles is such a long way to drive to go to the doctor. Good luck with your Sept. 7 appt.
