Ok, this is my 2nd day on Met 500 mg. I've read somewhere that certain foods make the s/e worse, (diarrhea, flatulence) Does anyone know which foods that is? What is a good diet to follow while taking Met to lose weight?
TIA,
Tigger

Hi Tigger. That's a very good question! I was on gluc previously about 2 years ago for only about 4 months and quit taking it because of all the side effects. Well now that my PCOS symptoms are way out of control, I'm back on the gluc which started last week.
I have read just about every post on this met/gluc forum trying to get a handle on this stuff. And from everything I have read, it looks as though most are having the best luck with a lower carb diet.
Hello my name is Kelly and I am a carbohydrate addict. I have been carbohydrate free for the last 42 hours. NOT!!! LOL Now from this stand point, the low carb diet has been something very difficult for me to do. But one thing that gave me a kick in the pants (litterally) ROFL, is one day I decided to try my favorite meal Chicken Alfredo pasta! OMG what a mistake! I was soooooo sick just a half an hour after eating it, nausea, vomiting, the whole works.
The good thing that came out of that experience, LOL is that now I just have to remember how terrible I felt after that meal. I swear I'll never touch another noodle again. LOL
Anyway, I started using the Insulin Resistance diet book and linking and balancing my carbs, and this has helped me tremendously! This has been so much easier than just trying to avoid all those foods I love!
Hope this helps a little!
oh and P.S
Drop the noodle and slowly back away! LOL
Try getting on an IR diet, even if your aren't IR, because it helps tremendously.
Don't eat stuff with sugar or high carbs.
I found it helped to completly switch to whole wheat and rye products. From bread to brown rice to whole wheat tortillas, whole grain noodles, ect....Stay away from white flour products. Try sugar substitutes. Which I personally don't do.. shame on you Ericka....But I've never really ate sweets anyways. But last weekend I had ice cream and b-day cake....Not a good idea at all. 60 seconds of eating cake = 2 hours of bad side effects.

UGH! This is my 3rd day at 500 mg. First day, I thought wow, no s/e. Guess I'm just lucky. Tonight, OH GOSH, I THINK I AM GOING TO DIE!! :p And all I ate for dinner was a salad. So, how long do the s/e last and when did y'all increase your dosage? I thought that most people went from 500mg to 1000mg after the first week. Um, I'm thinking NO! I know now why most people say that they lost weight right after starting Met. It's because everything they eat goes right through them!!! *sigh* Is my butt hanging out??!! TMI, I know. This feels like the equivalent of taking about 4 exlax, not pleasant. Oh well, this is what I wanted so I am sticking with it. Besides, I used to take laxatives to help me lose weight. At least this does have some good things about it, if it can help regulate my cycles and insulin again! Thanks guys!!
Tigger

I have been on met for almost 2 months...and the s/e were horrible at times. i am addicted to carbs. If i have the choice between a steak and a loaf of bread i choose the bread. But anyways, i also have found out the hard way that eating a lot of carbs makes the s/e worse, especially the poops...lol . I have read that taking the met at the times when you eat the most, like at breakfast and dinner helps ease the s/e. It really does work. But on a different note, has anyone had any luck with met, as in helping you O or getting AF? It has done nothing for me in that aspect, and i know its only been 2 months. It has helped me in that i dont loose as much hair and my BEARD doesnt grow back as fast. I also feel like i may have lost a little poundage. But those are all minimal to me...i want the grand prize!!!!!!! My DR, who is not an RE but i will be seeing an RE in January, says that i should take the met for three months, and if nothing happens that i will go on the met/clomid combo....I hope something happens soon. Best of luck to everyone!!!!
I've been on Met 500 mg for just over a week now. I've found that having a good high-protein bfast helps (I take it in the am). Had s/e days 1 and 3, day 3 being horrible. I had eaten leftovers right before getting sick so was confused why I was sick since I had eaten the same thing the night before and was fine. Then I figured out that it was that small glass of apple cider I drank! So I concur with the others who feel that sugar is a no-no. Fruit has been fine as long as I eat it with a meal or a piece of cheese. Actually haven't had any sugar since I started, and before that if you would have told me that I wouldn't be eating sugar, wheat, coffee, and low-carbing it I would have told you were crazy! Actually I am allowing myself a serving of rice or potatoes per day so I don't have any cravings.
Tonight I'm going to our monthly wine tasting party...it will be interesting to see if I can have a small amt of wine. We always have cheese too so hopefully I can eat enough protein to absorb the wine

Has anyone had any problems w/sweetners? I have had an occasional diet coke but am hankering for some sweets. My doc recommended Soy Delight--it's dairy free and sweetend with fructose, but I don't want to be in the bathroom all weekend!

lettuce, ice cream and anything really fatty have me sitting on the loo all day. I've been back on glucophage for around 3 monts now and haven't really battled, unless I have one of those

Good news--I was able to 'sneak in' both 3 mini Dove dark chocolates as well as a serving of Soy Delight ice cream (nondairy, low fat, fructose sweetened) on two separate days! I think the trick for me was to eat some nuts before the sweets so I had some protein to digest. It's strange, I used to have a big sweet tooth with a lot of cravings but since starting the Met it's been much less. However that won't stop me from eating a slice of pumpkin pie tomorrow!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone
Jennifer
Well I've been taking met for three weeks now. The side effects aren't as bad was they were when I first start taking them. My first week anything with carbs and sugar made me sick, on Friday and Monday I had a craving for Chicken Alfredo and enjoyed it both days with no Side effects, but last week I ate a salad for lunch...OH MY GOSH! I felt the worst, I havent touched a salad since because everytime I think about it i get flash backs. So I guess it all depends, everyones body reacts differently. Because it doesnt seem like the carbs and sugars bother me anymore. But I do know this I am NOT nearly as hungry...I only eat breakfast and dinner.
Well, I read this whole thread cuz I am starting Met 500 mg today. I'm to take 1 pill for 7 days then up it to 2 pills.
I laughed so much at all these posts. I know the s/e are not funny but the way all the ladies worded them had me laughing!
Guess I won't be laughing when its my turn on the pot!!
I'm afraid of the s/e already! OMG it is Thanksgiving tomorrow and I already know I'll eat too much!!!
