Is this normal? I am not thinning in any specific pattern, and no bald spots... but just overall I lose handfulls of hair. If I pull it, it comes out. If I brush it, it comes out. If I wash it, it's everywhere.... I am so scared I won't have any hair left. I have tried vitamins and synthroid but nothing is working.... is this part of PCOS or am I dying? :-P HELP!!

I understand your pain. Mine has done the same thing for over a year. I have lost over 3/4 of my hair. My endo (now that I finally have one that LISTENS to me) said it is a symptom of the PCOS. She also said that the gluc that she prescribed me should help. Wish I had better news. Hang in there.

I've discovered the same thing happening to me. I noticed the hair really starting to fall out in August. I would lose small handfulls in the shower, while picking out my hair, just running my fingers through my hair, etc.
I'm totally freaked out!! I do seem to notice that I can see through my hair to the scalp a bit easier now than I used to. I wonder when it's really going to be noticeable to others.
I don't know what to do. I plan to address it at my gyno appointment in November.
Me too... I noticed it started falling out after I stopped my BCP in Sept 00... it's been falling out ever since, especially in the shower and when I comb my hair out. Loads of it! I'm hoping the Glucophage slows it down... I wonder if I'm going to have any hair left on my head!!!

I also have thinning hair...but mine has remained the same for about 5 years now. I noticed about 10 years ago that my hair started to thin on my scalp, but no doctor could ever help me. Now I go to an endo. for the PCOS and also hypothyroidism. He says that the Glucophage should help and that I should start noticing a difference in a couple of months. So, we'll see. I also have hair growth in places that women shouldn't, so I'm wondering if the Gluc. will help. I sure hope so, because I don't know what else to do. Most days I feel tired and depressed, but try not to show it to others! I try to go out of the house a lot, and that helps somewhat. Well, I hope that all of us find answers to why and how to help our hair from falling out! Take Care!

It is due to high androgens - caused by high insulin in cysters.
Using Gluc. to lower insulin, and therefore lower your androgens is supposed to help.
My approach was a moderate carb diet, losing weight and going on saw palmetto. Less than a month of starting the saw palmetto, I stopped losing handfuls of hair in the shower, it was pretty amazing to me. Now it's growing back!
