Smile What has helped with acne besides BCP's?

I have a disease that makes me at a higher risk for stroke. My doctors ordered me to go off the pill to be safe. The pill was AWESOME for keeping my acne in check. Everyone would compliment me on my skin. Now, of course, it's a different story. Terrible back acne, as well as on my jaw line. I'm currently TTC #2 (in the dreaded 2WW after having IVF last week) so can't really do much, but in the future, what would you recommend I try? I have heard Spironalactone helps. Anything else that has helped for you all? Should I restrict my carbs? TIA!

Flax seed oil! I had a similar problem and flax seed oil works like a miracle! My derm recommended it. I first tried the ground flax seeds, and they seemed to help clear my face up a little. I then tried the cold, pressed oil, and my face is 99% clear. I take 1TBS at night with a small glass of oj. I hate the taste of the oil, so I mix a little with my oj--then brush my teeth. I have read that you shouldn't take the flax oil in pills b/c it changes the composition some how. Anyway, good luck!!

Thank you ladies! I went on Cleocin-T and that seems to help quite a bit. Salacylic acid makes me break out even worse. I have back acne, too, and I just can't reach back there, plus it's such a huge area to cover. I will definitely try the flax oil. I give it to my daughter every morning in her OJ so we already have it in the fridge. Plus, I know it's so good for you for other reasons so this is a good chance for me to try it. Thanks for the advice.

Really CherieB26? In that case I'm gonna go look for some oil right this minute! I take ground flax but I'm not sure yet if it does anything for me. I've been nutting around with several things: used some alcoholic substance + differin gel from my dermo but it made my skin really dry and I got red dry 'patches'- I quit that. Then I went on bcp for three months (2 months microgynon, 1 month diane) - then I quit this 3 weeks ago. I changed to dr Hauschka facial products, I started taking vitamins and ground flax and I'm not sure if my recent breakout is from a possible O or just from everything else I listed above. <sigh>
How long did it take for you before you saw improvements? I don't really have big fat spots but a lot of light red little bumps. It's like my skin is dry but still acné prone, perhaps in an identity crisis from all the hormonal confusion LOL!
Thanks for sharing this tip!

My Dr. prescribed this great cream that is a mix of benzoyl peroxide and erythromyacin. It takes a few weeks to work, but it has been incredible in helping with my acne. I also found that regular facial cleansers with benzoyl peroxide work much better than those with salytic acid. Good luck!

July--I saw about a 50% improvement with the flax seeds. When I change to the oil, my face was 100% clearer in about a week. Now, I only get a small whitehead about once a week. If nothing else, flax seed oil is great for your heart and to fight off cancers!! If you get the oil, get the cold-pressed w/ ligans. I found that one worked best. I take it at night (some people find they burp it later in the day if taken in the am). 1TBsp mixed w/ a small glass of OJ. I also use Retina-A micro at night every other day, but haven't found it works that well. I love Dr. Hauschka, also Jurliqe is a great company. Their recovery serum is awesome. Good luck and let me know how is works!!

I have found that the homeopathic Acne preparation has helped me - they come in small tubes and you just disolve them under your tongue. Also you should try Chastree or Vitex - this will definitely help but it takes awhile to work. Also Chromium, Biotin, Zinc & a good quality Omega 3 oil! Good luck!

Before ttc I was on Spiro (Aldactone) and it worked wonders for my skin! There are minimal side effects and it worked for me within 2-3 weeks. Since ttc my poor face has erupted and it's been so hard to deal with. If your acne is hormone related (from elevated testosterone levels) I have heard that Metformin can help with this and is safe to use while ttc, and it is also supposed to be helpful in regulating your cycles. I'm going to beg my obgyn to let me try it at my next visit. This whole trying thing would be a heck of a lot easier if I had my self confidence back!

My daughter loves Proactiv, but every once in a while it stops working. After a few weeks it starts working again. I don't know if you become resistant to it or what. She has tried antibiotics but had no luck.

I went of BCP for a long while, and I kept my acne in check by using a regime of Lush Products. I used them daily in the shower. First I washed with the ocean salt cleanser (both body and face). Then I used coalface bar (both body and face again), Then Harbalism mask. When I need to moisturize I use Vanishing Cream. It worked soooo well for my face, I had the occasional breakout, but nothing like I used to have. The products usually last 4 months, so although its a bit costly, its only one shot every four months.

Also, just to treat the occasional breakout, I use full strength calendula essence, it helps dry up new pimples so that they dont last as long, and they heal waaay faster.

Good thread. I use the generic form of Proactive called "Acne Free." you can get it at Walmart, Target, etc. It works better than Proactive (for me) and it's cheaper. I am going to try the flaxseed oil. I just can't tolerate the taste...yuck!!
