i have felt the urge to start buying babie stuff. i was wondering when you ladies started to gather the necessities such as crib, car seat or what ever else one may concider essential.
i had a dream that i was given a baby and there was no food for baby, but i couldnet get any food because i didnt have a car seat and couldnt go to the store. so we bought a convertable car seat today, it felt wierd, and i felt like an imposter. does that make sence?
while we were out we also bought a teddy so we would have somrthing to practice the car seat with (ya right) hehe.
how soon is to early to start gathering? i feel silly, but i also want to be prepared.
i also feel that it is helping me to prepare for parenthood. its a kind of reminder that we will be parents, but i am also aware that i may end up waiting a long time and may be dissapointed with the long wait.
My DH and I were given a car seat LONG before we even considered adopting... So its always been hanging around but its a fairly good one and not 8 years old yet so we finally get to use it, what a weird feeling !
I also felt like an imposter at Toys R Us or where-ever with all those big ole preggo bellies hangin out in there. I remember we went to Once Upon A Child to buy our crib and I went to move one of those plastic houses to get a better look and the lady was like "oh no please dont move anything ! Thats what we are here for" assuming I was pregnant !! I think I was red for 2 days...I said nah its okay I am not pregnant ! It was BAD
The only problem with DH and I buying all our stuff gradually is that newer stuff does come out, and we didnt get a shower becuz we already had everything. People just kinda came over with an outfit or whatever for him so we lost out bigtime there too...
Okay now again I had rambled but, I wouldnt feel bad for buying the odd thing here or there it kinda makes it feel like its going to happen, I totally get that. I think it helps too to get familiar with all the crap they have for babies now its insane !! LOL
Sorry so long
Amy

I think it's totally normal to start to buy or get baby stuff from family and friends in preparation for your adoption. I bought a crib and changing table last March before I ended up getting pregnant in anticipation of our adoption. Some women on the Pregnancy Board are buying stuff and their babies' aren't due for another 8 months.
It's taking me forever to make up my mind right now - I have been looking at crib bedding sets for 4 months now and still haven't decided. So planning ahead is a good thing
Have fun decorating your nursery and getting your layette ready :_

Hi, Well I bought all kinds of things. Not really "big" things tho, but I collected over the years such as baby plates, spoons, animals, little gowns, booties or whatever my little heart felt the desire for. It helped me keep the faith that I would someday be a mommy and have a family some how. Thru ttc or adoption. I did'nt let the devil stomp on my dreams of becoming a parent so I did buy. If that makes sense.
I don't think it's silly. But always remember you can and should have a shower for your little one. We had ours 3 weeks after Destiny was born. We got all kinds of things and when people heard by ear of her, well things were brought into my home like crazy. We were very blessed. We had a crib gave to us. Got a nice swing, high chair, so many clothes it wasn't even funny. But I did have a lot of things I bought for her in advance. I just couldn't resist.
We've been buying little toys, books and the like for a while now. We started the day we decided we were finally ready to get moving full steam ahead. Since then we buy something small for Sam at every milestone we hit. So we had one for starting the process, one for submitting our homestudy papers, one for completing the homestudy, etc.. We haven't bought anything big yet. A couple of reasons for that: We requested a child age 0-18 months, so we're really not sure WHAT to buy! Secondly, we need to paint and recarpet the room before we start buying furniture to put in it. Sam's gift for submitting the dossier will be paint for his room!
Also, DH has started a Hot Wheels collection for Sam. Each month he buys 1 car and puts it in one of those little see through plastic carrying cases. He bought a mini license plate that says Sam on it and superglued it to the front of the case. He's planning to buy 1 car per month until Sam's 3rd birthday, at which time he will give him the entire collection and also explain to him how daddy loved him so much that he bought some of these cars for him before they even met

<sniff> Brandy, that is the sweetest thing with your DH and the Hot Wheels cars.
As far as what we bought ahead--we ran the gambit from non-size things, like cute bibs, toys, etc, that we picked up over the years for any kids we would have, and once we decided to adopt anything that wouldn't be a size problem. Like Boppy pillows and cute washcloths and towels.
We were given so many things; including exersaucers, swings, jungle gyms, clothes--Maria is set until she's in 3T, we were truly blessed. So I would say wait until your shower and family and friends give you their gifts and previously used things before investing mucho money.
And the few things we did buy, thinking we would start with only a single, infant girl were total busts. Like when we had a gift card to Babies R' Us, and saw a GORGEOUS lacy bassinette on clearance (and it was the model) so we got it for nothing and still had $ on the gift card. It sat in our room for months while we waited for a referral. Then we thought we were adopting a two young toddlers. Then when that fell through, I thought, "I'll get to use my bassinette after all!" Both my babies HATED it. My daughter especially screamed like a banshee every time we tried her in it. The cats got more use out of it than either of my kids did as "bunk beds" (one up top and one in the blanket hammock underneath) until we gave it away.
The question is, what have I NOT bought! Hahaha! I have been shopping non-stop since we were matched. We already had lots of the things from DD who is only 2. I did buy a new stroller/car seat combo. This one is a double stroller because DD still can't walk. I got a new cradle swing, a boppy cover because DD's was PINK. I have bought tons of boy clothes and a new cradle set. I am having a blast! My poor DH isn't.....hehehaha!
