Default What helped you get pregnant?

Hi Thin cysters,

My husband and I are going to be actively TTC #1 this coming fall/winter. I have known for about a year that i likely have PCOS (very irregular periods - going months without, high LH:FSH ratio, mild hirsutism). I am just curious as to what helped some of you get pregnant who might have similar symptoms to myself. I get nervous thinking about how much it can all cost and wonder what the odds are of needing to do IVF or if there are people who were successful with other stuff?
Thanks!!

I would like to know too. I have acne, very irregular periods, high LH:FSH ratio and am just in the normal weight category - bordering on underweight.

Hi Schmoops,

Everyone is different, but here's my story. I never got my period w/o prometrium, have high LH:FSH ratio, mild hirsutism, and high testosterone levels. Surprisingly I never had a problem with weight or acne. My regular GYN tried me on Clomid- 50 mg-no O, 100 mg-no O, 150 mg-no O. For me, that was a total waste of time and turned me into a crazy woman :-) Finally I went to a RE & got diagnosed with PCOS last August. I was put on on 1500 mg of Met (even though I'm not IR). I was also put on 5 mg Letrozole (femara) for cd 3-7. It had no side effects and I ovulated right away. The first 2 months I had to get an HCG trigger shot. The 3rd month I picked up my own LH surge and actually got a potitive beta..but got my period shortly after. The 4th month on letrozole/Met I got my BFP and it stuck. I am currently 14 weeks. As I said different treatments work for different women. Letrozole & Met just happened to be the magic potion for me. Good luck!!

I got BFP after many cycles of clomid and hcg shot along with being on metformin. That took us 6 months. Now I am down the same road.

HI, we've been trying for over a year now. I was diagnosed about 10 months ago. I've been on 6 months of clomid, 8 months of met. a healthy diet, getting the fittest I've ever been and simply doing everything I possibly can to get there - The clomid made me hyperstimulate, so now im just on the metformin, lots of folic acid and multi vitamins - when is our day going to come?

I've gotten pregnant 4 times on Met alone. It took me over a year of trying before I got diagnosed (wasn't ovulating very frequently ...every 3-4 months, mild acne, high cholesterol, string of pearls on ovaries) for the first three it took me about 3-4 months on met to get pregnant and with number 4... well I was only on it for about 2 weeks when I conceived so not sure it was a factor that time (but I did try one cycle without first and I did not get pregnant). I stayed on met for the duration of my pregnancies and have 3 beautiful children and am 17 weeks pregnant with #4. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing. I am currently in the same boat as well. We are in the beginning stages of TTC. I am not sure of what lies ahead but all the info is very helpful.

Me too. Just getting started and not sure what we're going to try first. I haven't had a period in 9 months since coming off BC. Dr told me to get my weight up so I did and now I'm not sure if things have changed yet. Does anyone else who doesn't get a period chart? I was thinking about trying but don't know how to measure my cycles at all or if I am ovulating, going to start ovulating, etc....

If you aren't getting your period, than you aren't ovulating and it'll be really difficult to learn about your "normal" cervical changes/fluids etc... its GREAT when you have a more normal cycle, but won't help a whole lot if you don't. It might help if your cycles are on the longer side, but if you are going 9 months or more between it will be extremely frusterating. BUT I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the book Taking Charge of your Fertility. Such a great resource for learning about your body. I think its what helped me get diagnosed. Once you do figure out your pattern, than you can tell a lot from charting or recognizing your patterns (its how I got pregnant with #2... I never even got a postpartum period between pregnancies but I noticed my cervical fluid was getting fertile, so we tried and I got pregnant right away) but it takes several cycles to get a hang of so that if your cycles are that long it may not work for you. Good luck though!

I 100% believe that being on Metformin is what allowed me to conceive. After almost 5 years w/o success, 6 mons on Metformin and I was pg with ds (he's 3 1/2).

All the best to you!

Hi, It's been a long time since I was ttc! But I remember it as one of the most painful, frustrating, and exciting time in my life! I conceived two of my children using Clomid. The third was a miracle. I was trying to lose weight and my internist told me to lower my carbs as a way of managing my sugar levels. Amazingly, I started to get periods and got pregnant. I didn't know I was pregnant until I was 3 months along because I didn't think I could get pregnant on my own.

hi schmoops...i'm in a similar boat to u. i have actually been prescribed Met but hadn't taken it yet because I was hesitant to put these strong drugs in my body. Now, with 36-74 day cycles where I don't ovulate half the time, I am thinking that I might give the Met a try. It seems to have worked for a lot of the ladies on here. Have u talked to your doc about medication yet?

The side effects of met really vary with the individual. Don't be scared off by them. Some women have NO side effects. Mine were somewhat bad for a day or two each time I upped the dose, but after that there were no more side effects. Very worth it in my case. They tend to be worse if you eat a lot of fatty and/or high carb foods while on it.

hey TrishainAZ...thanks...yeah the more I research it and hear about other women who have been on Met and how well it worked, the more I am considering giving it a try. I REALLY need help regulating...my body is just ALL OVER THE PLACE and it is SO frustrating

For those of you who have tried it, how long did the Met take to regulate you?
