what herbs work like metformin(glucophage)??

i wanted my doc to put me back on met but he wants to wait 6mos to see if i get my period. I really really wanted to go on the met...cuase it helped me to loose weight....is there an herb that works like met to speed up metabolism and also to regulate periods. also, i was looking into going on herbs that do what met does anyway...cuase i dont' want to take drugs my whole life.

hi tanya,
met does not make you o. it is because your sugar and insulin levels are more regular. try chromium or n-acetyl-cysteine. they work like met but are probably not that strong.

My doc, who practices a combo of naturopathic and traditional medicine put me on a herb supplement by a company Nature's Way called Blood Sugar. We had to pull me off the metformin due to my having liver problems, but according to her this Blood Sugar works like metformin w/out the side effects on the liver. I've been on it for abt 4 mo now, and really like it. It gives me the same benefits as the metformin, but without doing further damage to my poor liver!

Its a fruit commonly found in asian countries and has lots of benefits for us. Its a bit difficult to find The real friut shuold be taken in form of a juice.. extremely bitter .. should be combined with carrot or orange juice to make it manageable to drink .. but worth it. I found some in an Indian grocery store ..its called karela. try chinese stores also
