Post What are the med options?

Hi all.

I'm actually meeting with my doctor today and I don't have any type of good news for him. I haven't been exercising (and I know many of us loathe that) and I stopped taking my Met about 2 months ago. I hated the way it made me feel and though he had prescribed Glucophage XR first, spending $40 a month on the prescription was pretty hard on the pocket book. He gave me the met which was cheaper, but I was to take 2 pills a day and that and the side effects did not leave me a fan of it.

I was wondering if there was some other type of pill like gluco where it only had to be taken once a day? I'm not sure what meds are out there. I was dx as being insulin resistant, but not diabetic he stressed. Surprisingly I got a packet from my insurance about my "disease" I think they are now labeling me as a diabetic. Its frustrating because if I was to say, No I have PCOS they would probably think I had something contagious!

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

I'm currently taking Avandia - which has no side effects and is only once a day. The downside is that it just hasn't done much for me (I'm hoping a higher dosage will do it), and it's even more expensive than Glucophage. If you don't have prescription coverage, it may not be affordable.

thanks for responding. i looked up avandia and it is covered on my insurance. BUT my doc wants me to go down to one 1000 mg metformin pill a day. Or to try even just doing half and then upping it. He also gave me this liquid form of met that reminds me of cough medicine. He said I could take one or the other. if it doesn't work i'm going to push for the avandia again.

take care!

Oh, I really hope that you give the metformin another try. For me the side effects started after three days and lasted about a week, but it really took my body about 6 months to adjust to it. The first two weeks, I thought about stopping it every day, but I am so glad that I stuck it out.

anyway here is a link for you to check out on other meds used for PCOS.

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm going to try again. Its just hard. He had me taking 2 pills and I'm horrible at it. I'd always forget one, etc. I know that's my fault. I've started setting alarms on my cellphone to remind me!

Thanks for the link also. Its great.

Take care!
