Default What medicine is available to treat my symptoms besides bcp?

Hi

I was taking bcp for four years for my pcos because I was rarely having my period, my acne, and my excessive hair growth. The Bcps did nothing to improve my symptoms except give me a period that was rarely longer then two days. I felt as though my doctor was trying to make it seem as though bcp were the only form of treatment for pcos because I was still going to an childrens hospital since I am under 21. I have now been off the bcp for almost two years and I have been taking nothing. I only had my period twice since i been off the bcp, all my symptoms are still the same plus i have put on alot of weight. I have a new doctor now at Temple hospital and an appointment coming up in two weeks and I would like to ask for a new medicine something that will be more effective in treating my symptoms but I dont want medicine that will make me get pregnant right now since i am still young. Does anyone know of a medicine besides bcp that will help me?

Met is an option and Spiro can be used to treat the hair growth. There are quite a few things you can take besides bcp. There are also natural remedies like Saw Palmetto and cinnamon. Many women have good luck with low glycemic diets. Just be sure you are using another method of birth control if you aren't taking bcp. It is still possible to get pregnant even with PCOS.

You might want to make a list of the specific symptoms you want help with and take that to your appointment. Then your new doctor can talk about all the options for each one of those. Good luck!

FYI: Don't let a dr tell you BCP is a form of treatment for PCOS. It is not. It simply masks, or hides, the side effects of PCOS. It does nothing to treat it. I agree with PBLazyod's suggestions.

Also I have had PCOS since I was 12. And they put me on BCP and after 6 months on them everything was worse. I had horrible acne, facial hair and gained weight. I then went from the age of 16-21 without anything and rarely had periods. Then I was pressured by my MIL just before marriage to go on BCP and was told it would help me. And it messed me up more. Then I tried going to the OB and RE to fix my PCOS and help me....all they wanted to do was maxk it with BCP but I wanted a baby at the time.
So I began doing research and found a Dr. John Lee and how he treats women with PCOS. And found an OB who was treating the same way. She used Natural Progesterone (Prometrium) on me instead of Provera.

I was given the Rx for Prometrium and used 200mg vaginally nightly from CD7-28 for 2 months straight. This helped to calm down the PCOS and to help heal my ovaries and let them rest. (I had 14 cyst when starting the treatment.) In 2 months time came my RE appointment and I had NO cyst. And I was double ovulating on my own with no meds. I ended up becoming PG that month as well after 5 years of infertility treatments.

But knowing you don't want to get PG you can still use the Prometrium just like BCP. BCP are synthetic progestin and they dont have the healing effects like natural progesterone has. So using prometrium like BCP will stop ovulation and also heal the ovary and help you to calm the PCOS and it symptoms.

I havent had a cyst since the summer of 04. Also, you can use the over the counter Progesterone Creams from the health food stores. Apply them daily from CD7-28 and rotate the area you apply it on. I have had great success with this cream as well.
Any questions just email me at Sophia.wannabe@yahoo.com I would be glad to answer any questions you may have about how I was treated and how to maintain yourself post PCOS stability. -Terra
