Default What is Met for? Recently DX'd with PCOS

Hello,

I am newly diagnosed with PCOS and my doc said I just need to take BCP's until I wanted to have a baby, in a few years. Other than that, just try and lose some weight and come back in a year for my usual.
She did blood work, and the results were:

Testosterone Serum: 81
LH: 18.5
FSH Serum: 6.7
Testosterone, Free: 3.7

I don't know if any of this means anything? Should I ask about metafrin or whatever its called? What does it do?

I'm 20 y/o and overweight. Other than the above results, no further tests were done.

Thanks!

Metformin is used to improve insulin resistance &/ decrease androgen levels. It also tends to help with weight loss. You can ask your dr about taking it now, although I suspect that unless your are clinically insulin resistant s/he may not think you need it. It would be a good idea to try to lose weight now and exercise regularily so that when you are ready to ttc you will be healthier. Being overweight tends to worsen/unmask PCOS symptoms.

Thank you for the response! Should I ask her to do some sort of test to see if I am insulin resistant? I go in on wed for another ultrasound to check my ovaries out. Other than that and her prescribing Prometruim every month, I'm doing nothing.

You can ask her about being tested with IR, but you may not need Met even if you are. I know when I was younger, I dropped weight like it was nothing when I started BCP. This was before I was actually diagnosed with PCOS, but I thought it was weird that most of my friends taking BCP gained weight, while I was losing it.

When I was on BCP's I was getting massive headaches. I am going to try this progesterone cream I have heard about. But heck, if BC might help me lose weight, I would put up with the headaches!

You shouldn't have to put up with the headaches. I would let the dr know so you could try a different BCP or lower dosage.

What are the tests they do to test for insulin resistance? They put me on Met and have been on it for 6 months. Haven't seen any improvement, just heaps of nausea and dizzy spells. Not even sure if the gyno tested me for insulin resistance in the first place. I am really becomming impatient with having to put up with this. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

I wouldnt suggest staying on a birth control pill that gives you headaches...that means your blood pressure is elevated and you dont want to have high blood pressure while being on BCP's. Blood clots could occur. Just thought I would through that in if it helps.

If it were me, I'd get a second opionion.

In order to arrive at a diagnosis of PCOS, your doctor should have first eliminated the possibility that you have some other disorders that have symptoms similar to pcos.

Also, s/he should have explained your diagnosis, and what it meant short term and long term, as well as, additional symptoms to be on the look out for - that might need further treatment.

I would also question why you were Rx'd something that gives you constant headaches.

We have tried a few different bcp's and even the nuva ring, but I guess the estrogen or something in them makes me have the headaches, thats why I haven't been taking them. I'm thinking about finding a new doctor.

Do you guys just go to a GYN or an endocrinologist or someone else?

My GP and Gyn both treat me. If I've I'm having a different problem, want to try something new, or need a script filled, I can ask which ever one I can get in to see the soonest. The are both in the same network, and have access to all of my records via computer.
