Default What is this Metformin I keep reading about?

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm wondering what Metformin is? Does it regulate the hormones? Side effects? Is it a pill or a shot? Is it specifically for TTC (short term) or PCOS in general (long term)? I've heard of Clomid and that forces ovulation, right? So is Metformin something different?

Is it possible to have a milder form of PCOS? The reason I wonder is because I do have symptoms but they don't seem as extreme as some other women's symptoms. I am overweight but only by 20-25 lbs, I have facial hair but not bad enough that I have to shave, and my periods are pretty regular, and I have the cystic acne but I'm sure some people have it a lot worse than I do.

thanks!

Metformin is also known as Glucophage. It is a pill often given to diabetics. In short, it helps your body with its insulin reaction. It is often given to women with PCOS because many PCOS symptoms are caused by (or made worse by) insulin resistance. In many women, keeping the insulin under control can help regulate menstrual cycles. PCOS is essentially a collection of symptoms, so you may have some more than others or no problem at all with some symptoms.

Ditto to everything she said!

The only thing I will add is that it is not specifically just for TTC, and most PCOS'ers are using it long-term. It can help many people whether they are TTC or not.

Good luck!
