I was just wondering if anyone knows what a "normal" LH/FSH ratio is? I've read somewhere that it is a 1:1 ratio. Other places it has been said that as long as the ratio is within 2 or 3 of each other, it is fine.
I'm a little worried because I think (THINK) my doctor told me I had a 6:1 ratio!!! Is this possible? Do people with PCOS usually have such a high level? If so, can it be controlled? I'm on Metformin. I was optimistic, but now I'm just scared.
Here is the link Hormone Levels. According to this site you are in the "good" catergory.
I think they can be controlled, unsure how, I ahve never really looked into the ratio indepth in my case before. I will look up my blood work that I last had done and see.
Please try not to be scared! I know, I know, easier said than done. We are here for you!
I brought my ratio down from 3:1 to almost 1:1 with Metformin, but it took time. Not sure how high the ratio can actually go - have you tried a search to find this answer?
My ratio was 5:1 in 1995 and met, IR diet and execise got it back down to 1:1.
It doesn't have to be ~exactly~ 1:1, but close is a good indicator that your hormones are where they need to be.
Hope it helps!

My last LH:FSH ratio was dated Feb 15, 2005 @ 2.8///6.4 So I am thinking that, that is a bad number ... I won't be getting them checked again until March 2007.
mine is 1.75:1 ... I don't know if that's enough of an indicator to label me as PCOS though...But that's my ratio on 3 years of BCP's so I would think that my ratio would be perfect.
Mine was about 5:1 when I checked last month but my doctor doesn't seem too concerned. He told me that being on met should help bring it down to 1:1. I guess we'll see when I check my levels in March! Good luck!
I was always wondering this too. Does it matter which is the higher number in the ratio? Everything I have read is that with PCOS LH is usually the higher value, but my LH was really low. I've never been able to find any information about it.
It is also important where you are in your cycle for what those values / ratios could be. LH surges just before ovulation, so ideally an FSH/LH test would be done on CD3, when you are not producing too much of either hormone in your cycle. This would give you a "baseline" level in the early follicular phase. I think FSH also rises as you get closer to ovulation, so if you were a few days before your LH surge, it might skew it the other way. The "normal" ranges for those 2 hormones that were included with my lab results are as follows:

My Day 3 FSH was 6.9 and my Day 3 LH was 4.8.... so mine is like 1.4:1 and my LH is lower than my FSH.... yet my day 21 sonogram (after taking Clomid Days 4-8) revealed poly cystic ovaries and NO ovulation! I have always had irregular periods.
So confused! My FSH and LH seems to be normal, so why all these problems?
Mine are:
LH - 10.2
FSH - 4.1
So that would be 1:2.5 or something like that I think. I just started met yesterday and will go back in 3 months to have the labs run again to see if it's working.

I don't know what mine were, but my last period was July 23 2009, the dr told me I had PCOS July 28 2009 and I'm 11 weeks pregnant ight now and only found out I was because I went for a MRI Sept 12 2009 and they wouldn't do it without a preg test first. I didn't think anything of it that I had not gotten my period since I've gone more then 3 months before without one. So who knows, Dr's say one thing and your body does it's own thing.
I just had my blood work drawn after being off all meds for a few months and Lh- 10.6 and FSH- 5.2 - these are from Wednesday. I also haven't had my period since Sept 11, I think normally my cycles are about 30 days long... I am not sure whats going on... but I have an appt on monday with my endo to probably get back on all the meds
