Default what is the optimal dose of metformin for results?

Hi all,

Just wandering what is the optimal dose of metformin ER (extended release) to be on to get rid of the pcos symptoms like weight gain, hair growth, etc....

I just started on 500 mg of met er and I was wondering what most of you were on to see results and what your doctors said. I of course will discuss this with my endo but I just wanted to
get an idea from your experiences....

Also, can the 500 mg actually DO anything being such a low dose. And yes I am also dieting and exercising too.

Did met really help when no amount of dieting or exercising help before?

Would really appreciate any answers. THANKS A MILLION!

I think the norm is about 1500mgs!

For myself that is the dose that has really helped my periods! They have gotten lighter and shorter after being on met for awile. I have lost 45 pounds, but have had no luck with excess hair growth.

Good luck!

HMMM, I am prescribed 500mg for a week or two, then go up to 1000mg. He wants to see me back in a month or two. How will I know if I need to get my dosage upped to 1500mg?

For someone who has tested insulin resistent, 1500 mgs is the minimum doseage, with some people needing 2000, or more.

Default I take 1000 mg

My insulin usually tests at the high end of normal, and this dosage works for me w/o too many side effects.

Wink Well.....

The average target dose is around 1500mg, BUT every woman's situation with PCOS is unique as she is. Some do see results at a lower dose, some takes more. The true indicator is your labwork. If you're seeing the numbers improve, then you're on the right track! For me, some the hair symptoms took about 5-6 months before I noticed real improvement. It really depends how far out of whack your hormones are, and how stubborn they are to change! For some of us, this happens relatively quickly (a few months) and for some it can take longer.

Thumbs up

I've been on 1000 mg of Met ER for about 2 1/2 months and have had great results. Hair loss has dramatically dropped and hair in the wrong places has definitely slowed. I still have both, but not nearly as bad. Plus, my acne is virtually gone. YAY!

Summer~

Great weight loss results! Are you on any particular plan?

I just started the South Beach plan this week. I was diagnosed last year with PCOS and have just now begun on Met-1000mg.
Did you have any of the side effects from the drug?

How do you know when and if the strenghth of Met needs to be increased?
