Hi all! I've been reading through the stickies here about met, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. Im wondering what (if any) physical (or mental, for that matter) symptoms you've all expereinced as a direct result of being IR. I'm asking because I've been dealing with some symptoms and I'm wondering if they're related to my new diagnosis of being IR! Thanks in advance I appreciate it!!!

Acanthosis Nigricans - Dark patches usually found in the creases under your arms, on the back of your neck and at your groin. You may also see a darkening of skin under your breasts, at the waist and elbows.
Skin tags
Hypoglycemia - getting shaky, dizzy, tired, confused when you go too long without eating or one or two hours after eating
Central obesity - aka belly fat or being apple shaped often with thin arms and legs
Oily skin & hair
Acne
High testosterone - which causes male pattern baldness (hair loss at temples and top of head), and hirsutism (hair where girls don't want it)
Thin lips - I've only read this symptom in one place, but it was certainly true of me. Once I started Met they returned to a plumper size. It might be related to the high testosterone.
Who is at high risk for being IR?
People with a family history of diabetes, who experienced gestational diabetes, had large babies or have American Indian ancestry
KYBluegrass, thanks for catching the ones I missed. I had forgotten about how terrible I felt in the morning before I started taking Met.
I should also mention the chicken and the egg symptoms of IR (does IR cause IT or does IT cause IR?)
Polycystic ovaries
High blood lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides)
High cortisol
Irregular periods (too few, too many, unpredictable, etc.)
Also, you might notice your hair getting thinner all over without having male pattern baldness.
Very few people have all of these symptoms, and some of the symptoms can be caused by other conditions. If a person has even slight Acanthosis Nigricans, it's almosts a sure bet they are IR, whether their bloodwork shows abnormal insulin levels or not.
Josie- Thanks for taking the time to share that list with me. I appreciate it. When you said "Does IR cause IT or does IT cause IR?", does IT stand for something, or is it the word "it"? LOL I feel like such a dunce not knowing.
Kat- Thanks for the link. I compeltely overlooked it last night when I was looking around for information. I think it was a case of "tunnel vision" LOL Thanks!
KYBluegrass- Wow, what an inspiration. You lost 165lbs?! How awesome! After reading your post, I started looking for the IR diet on the boards but I'm only finding really vague things so far. Am I missing something? If you could please let me know what the IR diet is or share your info with me, I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much!
EDIT- KYBluegrass- I just finally found the whole area for the IR diet so disregard my request! Any words of wisdom, though? I'm always open to hearing that!

Josie- Hey, girl, we're practically neighbors! I live east of Nashville. yes, you did add some good ones there. In some ways IR can look a lot like underactive thyroid at times.
ALC- my words of wisdom are, 1) get the book, 2)work the new eating habits slowly into your routine, so that they become second nature to you. Don't just try to wake up one morning and do it all at one time. Make it your lifestyle, not your diet. 3) Exercise, and 4) celebrate every victory along the way, no matter how small.

ALC, "IT" just means "it." Sorry to confuse you. I was just trying to point out that no one knows if IR causes PCOS or PCOS causes IR. Maybe they will someday.
KYBluegrass, I live the same direction you do. I have always been impressed with your results on the IR diet. I try to follow its principles, but have not been as faithful as I was when I first started. I have a really hard time eating much protein at one sitting. I got tired of lowfat cheese, cottage cheese and peanuts pretty fast. I have nothing against meat, but I never like it much before Met, and since I've been on Met, I really struggle to eat much of it unless I am starving. If I could eat excellently prepared fish everyday, that would be my preferred protein. I guess I need to move to Florida.
Josie- Thanks for the clarification. I was pretty sure you meant PCOS by "IT" but I wondered if IT possibly stood for something that I'm not yet aware of. Thanks again
