This is always a challenge for me. It always ends up being a disaster. Will someone please share any tips to make this a pleasurable experience for me?

I usually do a ratio of 1 cup rice to 2 cups water.......bring to a boil then simmer till water evaporated.......sometimes I add some chicken broth instead of water or just a boulion cube or two......
BTW I STILL can't cook white rice.......don't know what's wrong with me. I used to make any kind of rice and it was still crunchy. Brown rice I have been succesful with though, ramble ramble.

Ditto to dachshundqueen, only I would like to add that after you clap the lid on it once it's started boiling, you simmer it for about 45 minutes (as opposed to ~20 min for non-sticky white rice).
If your rice is turning out gummy or otherwise icky, it's probably not a problem with how you're preparing it but with the brand of brown rice you're using. My favorite is whole foods from the bin 6696 (country blend brown rice).
I don't know what type of brown rice I'm using. I get it from the bin at Wild Oats. Thanks for the tips, ladies! I'll give this another go. CRAP -- 45 minutes??!!! No wonder my brown rice does not taste like it has been cooked all the way through! I also tried cooking it in a rice cooker to no avail.

Yea, brown rice takes a while to cook.
I'll use chicken broth as well, for added flavor.
Good luck.

Nicole, do you like lentils? I'm becoming addicted to them. I add them to rice, stews, salads, etc!!

Yup, I like lentils. I think I like red lentils a little better than the normal kind. DH isn't that crazy about them (unless they're completely mushy like split pea soup) though he will eat them, so we don't eat them as often as we could.
My brown rice turns out pretty decently. Go figure - I can never get the minute rice to turn out right. I just follow the instructions - bring it to a boil - take down to simmer and cover for 1 hour. Works like a gem. Keep trying. I like to use reduced sodium beef broth too - really gives it a nutty flavor.
