Default What's the scoop on d-chiro-inositol?

I have seen this come up on a few post, saw it mentioned in a few PCOS books that I've checked out and noticed that there is frequently a banner trying to sell it on SC. I regulated for about 4 months on Met and now it seems like it's no longer working and I'm possibly looking for something else. Has anyone out there used this, and if so, did it help in TTC? If so, where did you buy it?

Default Inositol & Met

Are u using met concurrently with d-chiro-inositol? I have ordered some but was unsure if it was safe to take with metformin? I currently take 2000 mg of metforming.

it's mentioned in toni weschler's book as an alternative to met. it apparently helps regulate insulin. i don't know anything else about it, but i'm interested . . .

I tried it, after bleeding twice a month for two years. Metformin made my life hell (got fat, acne, and shedding...even after stopping met) and didn't help the bleeding either. Never O on it. One month on DCI stopped the bleeding and first O in at least 2 years. Stopped shedding and gaining weight too, skin cleared up except actually during AF. Third month we got bfp. I'm on 600 mg daily. I guess it's expensive, but not compared to injectibles or IVF in our sorry unmandated state. They told us IVF was our next step, so I figured just the DCI, what the heck, you know?

I have no idea about DCI & metformin together...maybe search for research on it.

Ive been taking DCI and metformin together for about two years now and it' a winning combo. I cant even describe the difference in the quality of my life... It's expensive but very much worth it for me. I feel so much better and the hair growth is betterm testosterone down, etc. I'm by no means cured but my life is much better on the two. I take about 600 mg DCI and 1000 mg met together daily.

I order mine from www.chiralbalance.com

One note though--they use UPS for shipping and 2/6 times I have ordered it UPS has delivered it twice as late as supposed to or lost it alltogether. So if you are ordering refills, order EARLY!

This terrifies me. How long after starting metformin did you notice these symptoms, particularly the hair loss?

I had an enormous amount of hair loss *before* I began metformin (2 and a half to 3 years ago), but now it just seems to me that instead of losing hair in the front (male pattern baldness) like I did pre-diagnosis and metformin, I seem to be almost imperceptibly losing hair all over (female pattern baldness).

Do most women lose hair on metformin?

I'm not sure...metformin did weird things to me. I know it made my DHEA shoot up through the roof, almost twice what it was, testosterone too via labs. I swear I could feel it raising useless unbalanced estrogen--I had HORRIBLE mood swings, libido of a kitchen appliance (take that back--at least the stove can get warmed up), gained weight--about 4 sizes that I had lost for over a year and never did lose even after quitting met (until DCI but pg now so hard to tell). I started shedding almost immediately on met but diffusely. Over time I realized the hairline was receding bigtime. Went off met and it continued on shedding despite higher & higher doses of spiro. It is just now kind of coming back in but I think that is due to pg than time--although DCI did at least stop the shedding. I also grew more facial hair on met. And I just was so, so fatigued despite supplementary B12 etc.

Come to think of it, all these things started within a month. Awful, awful mistake for me. But my story seems to be a rarity. Yes, I was on IR diet too--have been for years.

These are not real typical results for met. Most women lose weight, lose facial hair, and feel better. They also have diarrhea--I had the opposite, constipated so bad I had hemorrhoids! For some reason it just made the wrong hormones spike for me. And I still didn't O. I couldn't get past 750 mg a day either or it was just neverending puking. 8 months into it I got tired of being tired and quit. Plus my insurance changed and brand name met (which had better inert ingredients IMO) became $130/mo instead of $20. Forget it!

For that, you might need an anti-andrgen, instead of, or in addition to, Met.

Hey Kat. Thanks for replying Ive heard metformin can cause hairloss? I dont want to risk it but I suppose I will never know till I try right?

Does antiandrogens cause depression or lack of sex drive?

I suffer from both and had to come off hormonal birth control because of it

There are several out there. You should research the side effects of each one and discuss them with your doctor before starting any.

I didn't have any side effects from the one I took.

Head over to the HAIRLOSS forum...many of your questions can be answered there.

I have been taking D CHIRO INOSITOL for 3 days and I have lost 3lbs. This is a BIG DEAL for me because I have NEVER EVER EVER lost weight without reducing my intake to below 1000 cals or cutting out ALL carbs. I can eat carbs now without falling asleep and I have more energy. feel a little like I did on atkins, energetic but muscles tired, brother whos a dr said that its cos less glucose in blood but body will get used to that. I HOPE HOPE HOPE this works for me, I really didnt want metformin as my tummy is sooo sensitive. All the best girlies love pearl XXXX
