Question What's with the temporary hair loss??

Okay, so for weeks on end I have been freaking out about hair loss. My hair is medium length, and I've always had quite a few come out when combing it, but ever since July or so it just fell out in whole bunches. And I mean, every time I just ran my hand through my hair I would get as many as I used to get by combing... I totally freaked out about this latest symptom hitting me too now, and I made a doctor's appointment, which will finally be next week.

This started in early July, and I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but around the same time I used a new brand of hair coloration (Herbal Essences, I usually use L'Oreal).

This week I'm noticing that less hair is falling out. Thank God. But I still estimate about 35-40% is gone. (Luckily I have rather thick hair, so others haven't noticed.) And it feels so weird to handle my hair when I wash it or style it, and there is so much less than there used to be...

Does anyone know anything about temporary hair loss? This has never happened to me, and it truly freaked me out. Can I expect this to happen again?

TIA!

I feel for you although I don't know if I have any good advice.

I went through a similar thing last year. Towards the end of summer my hair started shedding quite significantly. I had the itchy, tickly, tingly feeling on my scalp constantly. This happened straight through to December.

At the end of November, I had started spiro, BCPs and was taking a ton of vitamins which I still am. Within a month or so, the shedding slowed to maybe 20 hairs daily and the sensation on my scalp went away. Only ocassionally did I notice it and it never lasted for more than a day.

All of a sudden this past August I started shedding again terribly and the scalp sensations came back full blast. I'm losing between 30 and 40 hairs every morning between showering and brushing and who knows how many throughout the rest of the day.

I'm wondering if the shedding comes in cycles??

In any case, my hair loss of 1/4 my original hair is gradually increasing to 1/3.

Hezzer,

I tried to read up on this and search the boards and the internet, but I didn't come up with a whole lot.

For some people it does seem to come in phases. But it's never happened to me.

I read it could be caused by hypothyroid problems. Well, I've got those, and I've started medication for it, but then why would the hair still fall out? Unless it's something like "acute thyroid failure", which I saw mentioned somewhere, but I'm not sure what that is. The one good thing is, if it is caused by thyroid problems, I read that the hair will grow back.

It has slowed down a little, but I'm still losing more hair than ever. My appointment is this Monday, but I have little hope, as I'm only seeing a family practioner. Our hospital does not even have a dermatologist at this time, and I cannot afford to see a Japanese doctor.

Also, my scalp does not itch or tingle. Did the doctor ever tell you what caused/causes your hair loss???
