Question What's a trigger?

This may be a dumb question.
I've seen alot of people on here talking about triggers for ovulation. And am wondering what exactly that means, and how do you know if you need to get triggers?
Thanks!

A trigger is a shot of stimulating medication (hCG) that gives your body the cue to ovulate. It's given when your follicles are large enough to release a mature egg (18mm or more).

Triggers are given under the supervision of a doctor, who needs to monitor the follicle growth.

Definitely not a dumb question. Just as the PP said the trigger is given to you to make you ovulate. My doctor monitors my clomid cycles. I go in for my baseline sono CD3 and then go back between CD12 & CD14. Depending on the size of the follies my RE will then decide to wait a few days and then do another sono to check the progress or prescribe the trigger (I use ovidrel). It's a shot that you administer yourself although I know some posters have said they've gotten it at the doc's office. My husband gave me the shot last month and it was no biggie.
