The minimum effective dosage for Metformin to treat PCOS is 1500mg. Usually you start out at a lower dosage, and slowly increase to 1500mg (this helps to avoid the side effects). Normally you'd stay at 1500mg for 3-6 months (time to allow it to really do it's job) to see how your body responds to it. From there, they can increase it, if necessary.

The documented min effective dose is 1500 mg (see the FAQ thread), but since IR is really considered an 'off-label' use, it really depends on your particular hormone situation. Some ladies have easy to move hormones or just need a small amount to fix their issues.
Most Dr usually start at 500 for women with lesser symptoms and if male hormones are high go up to 1500. Whatever your dose, your Doc should be doing regular bloodwork to see how your hormones respond so that you can take the minimum dose that will quell your symptoms.
Hope it makes sense!

I started out on 1000 mg, and after some time, I had another fasting insulin test done. My bloodwork was still out of whack, so they increased my dosage to 2000 mg. I think it's a good idea to monitor your insulin resistance in order to adjust your dosage.
