I was just prescribed metformin today, and picked up my Rx this evening. I am supposed to take 2-850 mg tablets/day, so 1700 mg/day. Is this a pretty common dosage for PCOS? I was just curious as to what everyone else is taking.
I believe that the minimum effective dose for women w/ PCOS is 1500 mg's? They usually start you on a low dose and work up to at least 1500. I'm on 2550 mg a day, which is the max.

Get involved in animal rescue. You won't be sorry. Your heart may break, there may be times when your eyes are red-rimmed for days. You may lose faith in the goodness of people, but your spirit will be renewed by the resilience of those you save. It isn't easy, but it's worth it. I promise you, you will be forever changed.
yes that is about right; as Mindijean said, 1500mg is the minimum effectiveness. I am rather surprised you are taking as high of a dosage as you are right off the bat though, just because the s/e can be atrocious! I started 500mg 1x/day yesterday and I am feeling pretty nauseated on top of the nausea I already had before the met. Usually dr.s have you start around 500mg and gradually increase your dosage over weeks and months to your optimum dosage to avoid s/e. If this works for you, more power to you!! Good luck!!

I was really feeling the effects of the met after my first pill last night. But the GI effects taper off once your body gets used to the medication, right? I deal with IBS, so I already deal with running to the bathroom all the time...lol. Granted it doesn't get worse, this won't be anything new for me!
I am really happy about met decreasing appetite as well! It's going to make cutting down on portions and eating healthy a lot more bearable.
Yes, your body should eventually get used to the medication so you don't have s/e. Some women who start out on higher doses never seem to get used to the medication, so they end up quitting it all together. If the s/e end up being too much, ask your doctor if you can lower your dose.

When I started on met it was 250mg a day for the first 4 months, then I was placed on 500mg a day for another 4 months, then moved up to 1000mg a day the following year till i hit 2000mg a day .. now back down to 1000mg once a day.
