I'm on 500 mg XR metformin right now, but I'm working my way up to 1500 mg. (3 pills) I believe that's a pretty common amount. I'm still in my first week of taking 500mg, though so it'll be awhile before I get to 1500.
I take the Riomet liquid twice a day. 1000 per day. I also take Byetta 10 twice per day, Novolog * units per meal plus sliding scale and Levemir 8 units am and 80 units at bedtime. Having nausea, vomitting and diarrhea since starting the Riomet last night.
Currently I'm taking a 500 mg in the morning and an 850 mg at night. After I run out of my 500s, I'm going to move up to the full 1700 mg/day. I would have done it sooner, but the side effects have been pretty bad.
Gosh, I don't know how you girls hold up with the high doses. I am dying right now. i feel the side effects very quickly. Kept trying to fight off throwing up tonight. Really nausated right now. Just hoping this will be all over soon.

I'm prescribed 2000mg/day, but I can only hold down 1000mg right now. And that's after a year. I have to take it right before I go to sleep, rather than with my dinner.
My doc put me on 500mg a day for one week, then upped it to 500mg twice a day for the next week. On the third week I was up too 1000mg in the morning and 500mg at night, and by the fourth week it was 1000mg twice a day. The s/e weren't too bad the first 3 weeks, but as soon as I hit the 2000mg a day they got really bad. I feel really sick to my stomach all the time, so much to the point it makes it hard to swallow a pill. Every time I eat something I'm running to the bathroom 30mins latter. I am eating smaller portions. I don't feel hungry as much and do get full a lot sooner than I used to.
Today I started 1500mg/day of the ER. I did a week with 500 and a week with 1000. I don't think I've noticed too many side effects, but I also started a low carb diet a little over a week ago and have chalked headaches and queasy stomach up to that - would that be more likely to be the met? Also, I take them all at lunch - my endo said to take them all with my biggest meal of the day. Do you think spreading them out would work better? Thanks!
I spread mine out with meals, Due to the side effects I usually take my largest portion close to bedtime. I was up to 1000mg twice a day but the s/e became too much so the doctor told me to go back down to 1500mg a day for another week.
I am also on 850mg 2x a day. I used to have bad GI side effects, but I have virtually none now. Since 850 is a big pill, I cut them up and upped my dose gradually. My RE always said I don't care how long it takes you to work up to your full dose as long as you stay on it. She said when people start too fast they are more likely to quit because of side effects. Took me 5 months to get up to 1700mg but I've been on it over a year now.

I got put on Metformin 500 mlg ER Tabs 3 per day. but I got extreme diarrhea so the Dr. told me to go down to only 2. I havent taken it in a while cause im stupid but I am starting it again tomorrow. Good Luck
