Points: 1,029.00 Bank: 1,578.89 Total Points: 2,607.89 | what should I do? I am 19 and a couple of months ago I was told I have PCOS. I knew when I was 16 though because of another doctor, but i never went back because of a bad experience. I decided to find another doctor because I have been having bad pelvic pains. When I went to my new doctor she did blood work. She told me that I did not need a pelvic exam/pap smear because I am a virgin and under 21. I have another appoitment next week. I am really confused because I really trust her but I have been doing some reading and because of the pain Ive been having and my past blood test I have read that I should have a pelvic exam and an ultrasound. She put me on birth control last time and the pain hasnt happened as often but when I do still have it, it feels stronger and more noticible. What should I do? It is hard for me to find a doctor I like because of past experience and I am comfortable with her but I am not sure she is doing what she should. |

Let her know that you are still having problems with pain and it would put your mind at ease to go ahead and have a pelvic exam. If she refuses, then it might be time to look for another dr, but hopefully she will agree to a more thorough exam. Good luck to you!

If you are comfortable with this doctor, asking her questions is not a bad idea. The doctor shouldn't be offended that you have done your own research, nor that you have questions. You have the right to ask her about your treatment. After all, it's your body, and you have the say with what happens to it. I don't think you need to worry about switching doctors yet, especially if you like her.

I understand how frustrating it can be to feel that there is something a dr should be doing, but isn't. I agree with the pp's who said that if you trust her, you should ask her to please go ahead with the pelvic exam, even if it's just to put your mind at ease. She hasn't already suggested an ultrasound? That seems a little strange to me given your pelvic pains. When I was diagnosed w/pcos, I was 19 and a virgin and due to a problem with my hymen; I wasn't given a pelvic exam. The dr did however insist on about three ultrasounds over the next year or so (I had numerous cysts that were monitored and they wanted to make sure there were no masses in my pelvis).
I'm certainly no dr, but I don't think your dr would be able to tell much by doing a pelvic exam. It seems to me that the thing you should be insisting on is an ultrasound, especially given the pain you are experiencing.
Good luck~

i am also a virgin and i suffered with the pcos symptons all through my teens at the time i didn't know it was pcos i just knew something was not right.
i kept going back and fore to my GP telling them about the pain and they also would'nt do a smear test untill i had, had relations with a boy.
nearly three years ago when i was 22, i was seeing my specialist about my cfs, and he needed to know my hormonal history. after i finished telling him the first thing he done was refered me to a gyno, i had a load of test, MRI, ultrasound, blood work, pelvic exam ect and it was then i was told.
I hope you find a doctor who will listen to you, the moment some doctors hear your still a virgin and they think you can't have anything wrong with you.
BlessedBe
