In general, it takes 20-30 mins for most meds to get into your system after taking them orally, but I'm not sure how Met specifically works. I also felt sick the first two weeks while my body adjusted, but don't have any problems now. I take it right after I eat. As for alcohol, I wouldn't recommend it-or at least make sure it has been a few hours since you have taken the Met. Read the warnings. A few weekends ago I was at a friend's house and had just a few beers and I started feeling extremely weak...it was even hard to breathe if I walked around or did anything. So I just went to bed. I had taken my evening meds right before I started drinking (it was an early night). Well, yesterday I was looking at one of the boards and there is a post that has a link to a drug interaction checker, so I put my meds in and here's what it says for met:
METFORMIN HYDROCHLORIDE and ALCOHOL
Severity: Moderate Description: Drinking ALCOHOL (or taking any product containing alcohol) while being treated with METFORMIN may result in an increased risk of a serious condition that may cause extreme weakness and heavy breathing.
Drinking alcohol while being treated with metformin is not recommended. If you are drinking alcohol while being treated with metformin, and are experiencing extreme weakness and heavy breathing, contact your physician immediately.
So, I figure thats probably what happened to me that night. I'm definitly going to be more careful now. If you want to check your meds I found that link under Meds-->Other Meds--> then its posted at the top (for those who want to check your med combos).
Hope that helps! Erika
