I am going to be going for a follow up with my RE and was wondering about spironolactone. I am not very familiar with it, and was wondering what it is used for. I read that it is to help excess hair (which I have a lot of), but does it help other PCOS symptoms as well (weight, acne, etc). Also, can you take it with metformin? How about with BCPs??
TIA for all info!

ive been on spiro for about 5 years. It really helps with the 'hair' but takes 9 - 12 months to get to maximum result, that's what my endo said. You cant ttc when on it, though, as it does something to the baby. Maybe that's why your dr said bcp too. Im on met with it as well.

I was on spironolactone while I had an IUD and the first year I lost 40 pounds, skin cleared up, hair stopped shedding but didn't regrow. Unfortunately, I stupidly went on metformin to "test" ovulation and my spiro never worked the same again, even after stopping the met. I gained back a lot of the weight & shed bigtime hair.
The *COMBO* of met & spiro didn't work for me, but spiro alone did. If you don't take with bcp it can mess up AF though.
Oh, even though I lost a lot of weight, I still kinda had my "apple" shape. I mean, I wore a much smaller size, but wasn't back to my pre-PCOS type shape.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.
According to my doctor it blocks the production of angrogens so if your problems are made much worse by testosterone Spironolactone can certainly help. Ten years ago I was on 325 mg a day of spiro nothing else dropped all my weight normal blood pressure stopped the hair loss and acne. The my endo died unexpectedly so basically I hate to admit I went without treatment until very recently and unfortunately my internistt will not put me on more than 100 mg a day. if it works for you it seems to work well and at a very reasonable cost.
