Default what is spyware???

Hello ladies,

Although I use a computer everyday I still see it as an acquaintance rather than a friend. I'm not bad at using one, but to be honest, computers scare me a bit (maybe I just haven't met the right one...)

So, can someone who gets on with these technological creatures tell computer ignorant me what spyware is and what the program spybot does about it? I'm really confused about all these things.

I don't know whether to trust my computer anymore with the personal details I give out on the internet when buying things etc.

I really should learn more about computers seeing I spend more time with one than with family or friends!

Thanks to anyone who can help me out here.

Lucy

Here is some information on Spybot.

Personally I think that programs like Spybot should be on every computer, just like Anti-virus software. And since so many new viruses, and spy ware programs come out so quickly, I also think that running them daily (depending on computer usage) is also a good idea - of course remember to update them often too.

If you don't already have an Anti-virus program installed, check out
AVG. It is free and we have it on all our computers.

Spyware is generally in the form of a tracking cookie, it's job is to transmit info on how you surf the web to it's parent company, then they send you more personalized ads.
In general, they are not trying to steal your credit card number, or information like that ( it can and does happen, though).
The biggest problem with ad ware is it slows down the preformance of your computer, and that can be a pain in the ass when you don't feel like waiting 20 minutes for your system to boot, change pages, etc.
I reccomend a program called Ad-Aware from LavasoftUsa ( you can get the download here from download.com ]
This is a free program, and it works pretty well, as long as you update it about once a week, and run the scan about once a week.
It will identify, and at your option, quarentine, or remove the spy, ad, and malware that is found on your pc.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me... Hope this helped!

Thank you so much guys for replying. I am one paranoid bunny when it comes to using my credit card over the net and I've been hearing about all this spyware/adware stuff but have never been really sure what it was.

Now it's much clearer! Thank you!

I might even start to shed my status as a Ebay virgin and get shopping soon...
