Default What is "T-7?"

I was talking to my cousins and aunt about all the blood work I will be having done soon, and that they were checking my TSH. My aunt said, "Oh, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, that's nothing. If your tests come back negative, have them check your T3, T4 and T7's." I figure I'm already gonna have more track marks in me than a junkie, I might as well have them test it all at once!

I looked on the form, however, and while I saw T3 and T4, T7 was nowhere in sight.

Does anybody know if T7 could be listed as something else, or did they just have their T's mixed up?

I think they may have their T's mixed up. From what I just looked at - their is only T3 and T4. Maybe she was trying to be cute.
T3 + T4 = T7
The few sites I just looked up did not mention a T7.

I think you're right, or else she was just mixed up. I called my doc's office and while they weren't willing to change my orders over the phone (they seemed wary of the info I was giving them!) they did say that my blood would be good for two weeks after the test, so if my doc feels further testing is in order, at least they won't have to draw more!

The guy I spoke with said "almost nobody tests T3 anymore" and said my insurance probably wouldn't pay for both at once. This seems odd to me . . . I have heard more than one person say their thyroid condition was not picked up without testing T3 and T4.

Understand, I don't even have a reason to believe I have a thyroid problem, but I do want to be sure all the tests are thorough. It seems my doc seems only interested in checking for Syndrome X and related stuff, like cholesterol, and not much else. For instance, I'd like to get allergy tests done. I'm hoping I don't have to go to another doctor to do it.

T7 is a mathematically derived number based on what they think thyroid levels are based on measuring other levels... it is actually not a valid test at all, most good doctors don't even do it because it's functionally useless.

So, ignore the T7. It's junk.
