What are the tests for Liver and Kidneys while on Metformin??
Hi
I'm on metformin 1500mg since Jan 2004. Initially met was prescibed to help me ovulate and was supposed to stop treatment within 4-5 months once we tried clomid+met if I didn't ovulate. Since it was supposed to be a short period over which I was to take it the doc didn't run any liver and kidney tests.....Now my FSH has gone up from 6 to 8 and my Gync wants me to go on low dose BCPs for 3 months to suppress the FSH. That means more metformin.....so I am planning to ask her to send me in for the liver and kidney tests.....met has helped me a lot and brought down my fasting insulin from 13 to 6 in 3 months.....so I don't want to stop it.....
I'd like to know what are the tests that the docs write for checking the kidney and liver functions.....just want to educate myself before I go for my next appointment.

Most Dr's run the ALT and ALP tests to screen the liver. Unless there is reason for serious concern (jaundice) or your results come back abnormal, they don't usually order other tests.

Thanks Christy....I'l be asking my doc for these in my next appointment or whenever she feels i shd have them done.
