Default What were your symptoms before being diagnosed?

I was just wondering what your symptoms were before finding out you had a thyroid problem. I haven't got my testing done yet, but will be soon, and I truly believe I have something wrong with my thyroid. I just feel it.

Well I just found out that my test were 2.83 back in Feb but I'm always tired. I mean I feel I never get enough rest. I'll know 2morrow what my new results are and I'm scared half to death. My new doc says thats high when ur ttc. So if i get on something and I get pg I'll be super happy.Plus he thinks that could have caused my mc. I'm going into details with him thursday at my appt.

i was exhausted all the time... no matter what. which made me feel sick or flu-ish ALL the time. I also gained almost 50 lbs. it was horrible. i was eating right and doing some exercise and rapidly gaining wieght. I went to my reg dr, and a regular endocriniologist and they all made me feel crazy. It wasn't until this past may when i went to my RE that she saw my first set of b/w and immediately put me on synthroid. I feel SOO much better. and with that and the metformin (i was really insulin resistant) i have lost 30 lbs. Also had dry skin, no tolerance of cold, and irregular and heavy periods. (part to do with PCOS and part thyroid)
I was depressed at one point which can be a side effect.

Best of luck . i hope you are diagnoes quickly if you do have it!!!

Just like the other ladies that posted...I was so tired. I just couldn't get enough sleep, no matter what. One night, I took a 3 hour nap. I got up around 8 p.m., went to bed at 10 p.m. that night and sleep for 12 hours! I knew something wasn't normal after that. During this time I also gained weight really fast, I was sleeping all the time and I couldn't understand where this weight gain was coming from. I was only eating me meal a day (not on purpose) and I gained 40 lbs. I was always cold also. I couldn't seem to get warm at all. When I went to the doctor to find out what was going on. She diagnosed me with hypo. It was such a relief to find out what was going on with my body.

I have not been diagnosed, but I am also convinced something is wrong with my thyroid. My mother has hypothyroidism and my aunt and cousin both have/had hyperthyroidism, so thyroid problems obviously run in my family. I eat right and I exercise, but I CANNOT lose weight. I'm also tired ALL THE TIME and my hair is falling out like crazy, yet my thyroid test came back normal. HELP! Does anyone know what I can do??

The first time I was achy and was always hot. I went off my meds for a while and felt fine. It was weird because I was off my meds for a few years and when I was tested again my levels were all normal. My obgyn decided to test it again 4 months later after my yearly visit and my levels were off a little bit. I just had my 6 week blood tests after being on the meds ...waiting on results.

I am currently being investigated for thyroid issues as I have a lot of the issues from the list. however, everytime my gp tests my thyroid they say the levels are 'normal', but I've heard that even though the levels might be 'normal' for everyone else they might not be quite right for you? has anyone else had this experience? TIA!!

Holy crap VerbalOrchid! I wasn't aware all that stuff that could be related to hypothyroidism.
I have sleep apnea but was still tired. One of the weirdest things that annoyed me and is directly linked to the thyroid is losing the outer third of your eyebrow! I noticed I was starting to lose them earlier this year. I guess once my TSH is under control i will find out what else it was effecting!
Fallenangels2-I know that too high of TSH can lead to MC.
My GP said he would prefer TSH was 2 while pregnant.
I originally was at 7.4, after 6 weeks on 50 mg it went down to 4.8, I got B/W last week but waiting to find out where it is. I have been on 75mg for the last 6 weeks.

I have indeed had that experience and it's sadly all too common. My biggest beef is the fact that TSH isn't measuring your thyroid output; it's measuring the signal from your pituitary TO the thyroid to produce energy for the body. That's why for so many it's inaccurate. To go by symptoms is best, but try convincing most doctors today of that. *le sigh*

yeah i'm so worried about going to the endo and being told yet again that there is nothing wrong and that it is only PCOS, I really think it is more than that. Its so discouraging to get told there is nothing wrong when your going crazy lol. I have high bp and they want me to get that down before I can go on bcp or think about having kids, yet my bp meds dont work and even though i'm doing 300 minutes of exercise a week I'm not losing the weight they want me to lose. honestly cant win!!! what else am I meant to do ya know?

sorry... rant

It took me at least two years to get properly diagnosed with Hashimotos Thyroiditis. I gained 40 lbs. in about 6 months, my perfectly clear skin developed acne, my period stopped, my fingernails pealed off in layers, and my hair fell out. I got so tired that I could only get through the work day and would crash right when I got home - too tired to eat. It finally go to the point where I had extreme muscle weakness - could no longer raise my arms above my head. After about a year and a half of this my Thyroid itself became very swollen and I couldn't even stand to have cloth or shower water touch my neck. Apparently with Hashimotos the Thyroid is erratic until it finally poops out - causing you to test negative for awhile. I was treated like I was crazy and/or just depressed by doctors, too. It was a very frustrating time. You must be your own advocate!

I have not been diagnosed yet and I am making an appointment with my mothers Endo this week. Thyroid problems are big on both sides of my family. My mother has Graves Disease, my aunt has Hashimotos, my cousin has Addisons, her sister has Hypothyroidism, and my grandmother has a thyroid problem.
These are some of the symptoms I have:
Chronic fatigue( I can sleep forever if i was allowed to. I cant seem to get enough sleep)
Edema(Legs,ankles,feet)
Dry itchy skin
Dry itchy, flaky scalp(never had until a few months ago)
Brittle nails
Coarse, dry, breaking hair
Hair loss
Always cold
fogged brain and forgetful cant concentrate
no period
no ovulation
Acne(I never had acne even as a teen)
very moody
Cant lose weight&gain very easy
Irritable Bowel
The weird white hairs growing

The edema was my very 1st symptom when everything went haywire before I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2005. The edema just doesn't seem to fit PCOS. Oh and my RE said my hormones were normal and it didn't seem I had PCOS. WTH? Two different Dr.s telling me different things. I was diagnosed with US and BW and I had been on Met up until 3wks before the REs bloodwork. So off to my mothers Endo I go. He diagnosed her after 2 others couldnt. Gee this is frustrating

I didn't realize white hairs was linked to hypothyroid?! Do you mean the ones in your eyebrows? I have a few and just assumed that it was like a grey hair, from getting older.... Hmmm. Interesting! I have most of the symptoms and have been told for years nothing is wrong with my thyroid! I have an appt this week with a new endo, hoping to get some answers!
