What will you be when you grow up?
Asked since I was so young….
A runner, a doctor, a teacher, or more…
Limits? For you there are none!
“A mommy!” I say, at the top of my voice,
And I run off to play that lead role…
They shake their heads, so sure that will change
That silly desire will surely get old
What will you be when you grow up?
Asked years later down the line…
A lawyer, accountant, an actress perhaps?
No matter what you’ll surely shine!
“A mom” I say, so sure of myself
And I run off to play with the children
They shake their heads, there’s still time for change
Her true goals are just somehow hidden
What will you be when you grow up?
A familiar question by now…
A writer, reporter, or maybe a judge?
Whatever your goals, you’ll reach them somehow!
“A mother” I say, still nothing has changed
That dream comes to college with me
They sit confused, such a silly girl
What a waste of brains, can’t she see?
What will you be when you grow up?
Graduation behind, life ahead
Masters in hand, you must want to be SOMETHING,
There’s still time, make your wishes again!
“A parent” I say, as calm as before,
My eyes reflecting my own parents’ dreams…
I can’t imagine anything more worthwhile,
Nothing “more” that I want to “be”!
What will you be when you grow up?
The answer can’t be the same!?
With masters in hand, I only smile
My dream has never changed
“A mommy” I say, like so long ago
Now I wish I could play that lead role
Nothing so cruel as the end of that dream
So tightly I’ll keep my hold…
ditto... but my dream finally came true... ONly thing my college degree got me wa my husband. I tell my parents that they spent all that money ( i went to a pretty expensive college) for me to find happiness as I met tom at college and we're married and have a beautiful boy I so know what you mean! I PM'd you

I always wanted 10 children. I had a hysterectomy nearly four years ago do to my PCOS and I have learned that just because I no longer have those organs necessary for that to happen does not mean that I cannot be a mother to children. Thank you for your poem it really touched me.
When anyone asked me growing up that was my answer! I'm going to be a mom, mommy, momma, mother all the same. I am a mother now ... just my children didn't live. but I do know my children KNOW I love them and they were so wanted! But the only thing my answer has changed a little. My new answer is .. I want to be a mother to at least one child who can live. If I can't have that I at least have my children in heaven. I will see them one day.
