I have a bit of a delimma. I went to the Dr today and he said after my ultrasound to varify my PCOS,( because of course they can never take another dr's words for it.) I have to decide which drug route I want to take. I have a choice of birthcontrol pills or Glucophage. So, my question is, what would you take. What seems to work best? I haven't had AF since September 04. Thanks for any advise.
oh and BTW no I am not looking to get pregenent anytime soon. I haven't found the other part of that equation to even think about it

Hi!
I just wanted to tell you that I'm not really sure which one I would choose, because I was never given an option. I was put on bcp to regulate my period, which it did, and that's all I was ever on. What is glucophage suppose to do? sorry, I don't know anything about gluc. I've heard of it but haven't done any research on it. Good luck with your decision though, I'm sure someone here will be able to give you better advice than I could! Be glad that they are giving you the option to choose which route you take! Some of us aren't so lucky to be given the option! HA!

In my opinion, you could take both if you wanted, you shouldn't "have to chose." If you would rather be on one, I would go on Glucophage b/c it works on controlling your insulin, which in excess causes many of your problems. You can also save money by going on Metformin, which is the generic form of Glucophage. There are some birth control pills which make PCOS worse, and birth control will only help you get your period, and it may help acne, or excess hair if you take the right one, but it's not going to work on the underlying problems with PCOS, which is what Met/Gluc does. I was on Ortho Tricycline and it made me so depressed, made my acne worse, I was crying everyday, I craved sugar and put on weight by just looking at food. I did not take Yasmin and that one is supposed to better than Ortho, but it affects women differently so you won't know how something works with you until you try it. There is a guide on this website under "other medications" that breaks down birth control. I dropped the bc pills b/c I couldn't handle it and I am now on Met and just watching what I eat and working out, and I am doing much better and my symptoms are disappearing slowly. I am losing weight, my period is normal, my blood work is so much better which I never saw while on birth control alone. I would talk to your doctor about trying maybe Yasmin and Met/Gluc. or just Gluc. but if you are going to go on one, taking just birth control is not going to help you metabolically, which is where this syndrome orgininates, do you know what I mean? You also need to watch out for things such as diabetes and heart disease with this disease, and only Gluc. is going to help you. If your doctor only gives you one choice, that is not good because this disease may require a different cocktail of pills to manage the disease, and you usually find that out by experimentation. By looking at many womens' signatures and profiles on here, you can see how many medications everyone takes, and those pills may have to be adjusted or changed from time to time, so for you doctor to say you can only do one, makes me a little concerned, and all the doctors I have come across have been pretty willing to work with me, unless it could get them sued, like taking Spirolactone without taking birth control because of birth defects. Anyways, I would review the section on the birth control pills, and read up on Met./Gluc. and see if you can talk to your doctor if you want both or one. Hope this helps

Personally for me, I would choose the glucophage. The reason why I say that is because birth control pills aren't solving your problem for pcos. All is does is mask your symptoms. The glucophage helps with your sugar and insulin and with that, it can try to get your body on the right path to function properly and get your hormones stable so you can that AF on your own. You could take both which wouldn't hurt. Whatever you feel is best for you and your body, go for it.

I take both met and BCP. (I use Lo/Ovral). I agree about BCP alone, it doesn't help the root of the problem. It can help regulate your period, but met can too. I too have heard that some BCP is NOT good for women with PCOS to take. The Lo/Ovral works fine for me, my dr. and I made sure it was one that was "PCOS-compatible" But on BCP alone, I tend to be more depressed, moody, etc. and it didn't really address most of my PCOS symptoms. The met has helped me a lot. My periods are more "normal" and my hair isn't falling out in gobs, etc. So I would probably ask for both! Just my opinion. I hope whatever you decide, that it really helps! Good luck.

I agree with everybody who says they would choose Gluc/Met if they had to and for the same reasons- Gluc/Met actually treating the problem. I was on both before TTC and having my DD. Why is your Dr. making you choose?
I refuse to take BCP. I would go for the Metformin.

Met, hands down. BCP's have nasty, and sometimes deadly side effects. They say its a statistic, but now this, I'm the statistic. I got one of those blood clots. It nearly killed me too. I was 18, non-smoker, so not exactly high-risk, but I got one anyway. Now I can never take hormones again, of any nature.
Met treats the problem, bcps mask it and often make it much worse. My 2 cents!
Ditto what everyone else said! BCPs made my PCOS worse. Met has helped me!
