Default What Would You Do?

Hello!
I'm looking for opinions on what YOU would do if you were in this situation. I'm not looking for anyone to advise me on what I should do.....just gathering info on what others would do.
Here's the sitch:

I was dx'ed PCOS right at the end of my last period, end of July. Hubby had his semen analysis and it looks okay, slightly slow motility, but otherwise okay. My uterine lining looks fine.

After seeing the doc a week ago it was decided that on Day 1 of my next period I call the office, on Day 5 I start 50mg Clomid, on Day 9 I go in for an ultrasound to see if I'm ovulating, if/when I ovulate we do a semen wash and inseminate.

In the meantime he upped my metformin and my blood glucose numbers are FABULOUS, I've been watching everything I eat, taking in very little caffeine, really, being very good. But I really don't think I conceived this month....I really feel very normal at the moment. So it looks like we'll go with the original plan.....

Another factor, is that my hubby's job (General Motors Foundry) is going to be idled and he'll probably be laid off in about a month....we'll still have benefits while he's laid off, but we really have no idea what the future holds where all that is concerned. Although I realize that we could get Medicaid if necedssary.

It has occurred to me that maybe I should wait a few months and give the met a chance to work....and try the Vitex that I've read many great things about....and just see if my body responds to some less dramatic treatments before doing the Clomid...which I hear has some unpleasant side effects.

I have always responded very well to medical treatments, medicines, anything like that....so I really am confident that the Clomid will work if not the first time than the upped dosage on the second try.

I have about a week to really make my mind up....and I'm probably going to go with the Clomid and just "Git'R Done" while the insurance lasts...I mean, why wait?

But I wonderd what others might do in the same shoes......

if I were in your shoes, I'd go for it! That is almost the exact same mix that I got my BFP on, lol. I think, theres no better time than the present right? If you keep waiting until everything is perfect, you'll be waiting forever! Plus, Met alone is not enough for so many of us. ANyway, like I said, I'd do it.

Knowing what I know now, I would not waste anytime. I would do the Clomid, especially with the insurance situation.

Good luck!

I would wait.

I waited a year on just Metformin alone to regulate my cycles and it was actually when I went in for evaluation and Clomid,... when I discovered we didn't need it because I was already pregnant!

I would also wait because while you have insurance NOW for getting pregnant, will you have it later for prenatal care and giving birth and getting the baby insured?

Mine was a high risk pregnancy with emergency c-section. She cost $30,000 to bring to light. We paid 3 thousand of it and insurance picked up the rest. She also cost us an additional $185 a month to insure after her birth too.

I would wait. The whole DH being laid off would scare me. I wouldn't want to have the added stress while pregnant.

I think I would wait with the how DH being laid off thing. I would worry too much about not having the money. Babies cost WAY more then you ever thought!!

ok, so I would have infertility coverage now, and if dh permanently loses his job (after the shutdown) of course he could get another job, but would it have fertility coverage? I wouldn't know so I would go for it.

My dh had a job (lousy pay)with GREAT infertility coverage, infact it would go as far as 3 ivf cycles and that is after all the other stuff is exhausted. It covered all the prescriptions too, only a 5.00 co-pay.

He now has a great paying job, and the insurance is good but NO infertility coverage, not a penny. So now when we are in a better position financially to expand our family and I need some help in that department, all of it comes out of pocket.

The Ford company does that over here. They do it 2 times a year I believe, for about 1 month at a time and they are allowed to collect unemployment during that time. Hmmm, wonder if all car manufacturers do that?

I would go for it. I waited 2 years after we got married to TTC #1 now 2 years later, still no #1. Espically now that you have infertility coverage, I would go for it, if your DH does get laid off and doesn't get back to work, like you said there are always programs out there to help you. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

I should clarify a couple of things.

GM does NOT provide any fertility coverage....although they have changed insurance companies so we're going to be guinea pigs and see what we can get done, but we have to expect to pay out of pocket for any of it....which means we're not going to go much further than the Clomid stage.

I don't have any real worries about what may happen when DH gets laid off. The lay off pay is 95% of day shift pay so our weekly income will only change by about two hundred....a significant drop but not anything we can't handle. I also do not currently work so I am our back up source of income if things get rough....I can do medical transcriptioning at home or any number of things...I have useful work experience and a degree and all that good stuff.

DH will have insurance until about the end of '08 at least, possibly longer than that. When the insurance goes away NY State has what's called the Family Plus Program, a spin off of Child Health Plus. It's a division of Medicaid (you apply to medicaid first and if you don't qualify you're shuffled to this program) where children and families who do not have insurance through their employers but make too much to get Medicaid can get health insurance through NY State.
But if it came to the point of DH losing the benefits he'd go find a job that has them....that's not really hard to do, WalMart and McDonald's offer great benefits....not that those are jobs he wants to take at 36 years old but you do what you have to. We live in a rural and depressed enough area that a family can actually live off those wages up here. The cost of living is ridiculously low up here. A family of four could live nicely up here, own a home and two vehicles, for $50K a year.

So anyway! The layoff pushes me more toward doing it NOW while the insurance is good. I have no choice but must have a c-section -- my son, who is nearly 7, was born c-section and I had gestational diabetes so I have no illusions about the cost of pregnancy or babies. I'm a Type 2 diabetic now so I'd have to see a specialist a couple times through the pregnancy along with many other regular tests and things "normal" women don't have to go through.

It's easy to forget when you're writing something that there is no tone to the written word! :-)

So.....I expected to start my period last night but didn't. In the last several months it's been fairly regular and starts after midnight on a Saturday night. Although one time a few months ago it didn't start until a Monday.
Just to be perverse.

It'd sure solve the entire issue if I were pregnant now on just the met and diet and excercise and losing weight!!!
I doubt it, though. I'm still planning to go ahead with the Clomid. I'd rather go through a pregnancy with BCBS than any form of Medicaid, so the sooner the better. If the Clomid doesn't work after a few months maybe I'll take a month off it and just continue to lose weight and try the Vitex that just arrived. I have another friend who has been TTC for a couple of years now, if I end up not using that Vitex I'll donate to her.

Well I think that changes a lot. You left out a LOT of info in your first post.

If basically nothing is really changing other then the fact that your DH will not be working but will still be getting paid with insurance...I don't understand your problem?

I would just go about TTC as you would any other time.

If it were me, I would wait. I guess to me, even though your DH will be getting paid and insurance for a while, it doesn't mean he will forever. I know that places like McDonalds offer benefits, but I still think I would be too practical to think of a family living off that salary. Also (and this isn't meant to offend anyone), I don't think I would feel comfortable if I had to go on Medicaid after choosing to have a baby.

What really sucks is that he is getting laid off in the first place. Especially from a company such as GM. It seems like I am hearing about this sort of thing all of the time now Is there other good companies in your area? Would your family be willing to move out of the area for DH to find work? I would imagine that if the company is laying people off, jobs in the entire area will be harder to get with the rise in unemployment. Anyway, I just wanted to say that it really sucks and I hope he is able to find something good after his pay runs out.

As a side note on the medical transcription thing, if you haven't done it before don't plan on being able to jump right in to it. I have worked as an MT for over six years, and it just isn't that easy to hop into.
