what were your SHBG and Albumin levels? If they were low or low normal, then the proportion of your testosterone that is unchecked can still be high. The other question is, when you say 'normal', do you mean lab range normal? like under 82 or 86? because that is the general range for all women. You need to look at age specifics.
see this page which breaks things down by age.
Mine was 11, and my Total T was 73, my shbg was low normal, and when I calculated what is called the
free androgen index, which is a ratio between Total T and shbg, it was 7.24.....and over 5 is considered hyperandrogenism...ie..hirsuitism, acne, and so on...incl. head hear loss. They claim this is a better reflection of how much free floating androgens are in your system.
You might want to look
at this site which will give you your free and bioavailable testosterone levels based on your other test results. Bioavailable is like the free androgen index except it also takes into consideration your Albumin levels, not just shbg in calculating how much testosterone is running around unchecked in your system.
I ran into the problem that the clinic I went to told me my hormones were fine because they fell into the lab ref ranges....but they are absolutely not....and from what I've otherwise read, most women with PCOS have Total Testosterone levels in the upper range of that general lab range.....or a little above. If you start getting readings above 150, they begin to suspect androgen secreting tumors rather than PCOS.
good luck!
