Question What are you taking? Is it working?

Hi all! I am 17, I have not yet been diagnosed with PCOS as I still need to go for the testing. I am almost positive I do though, as I am experiencing almost everything and feeling everything that all of you other cysters are. My question is about treatment. I am concerned about my weight, acne, hair and irregular periods. I have heard people talking about the bcp and met, and I was wondering if you could share your personal experiences with the different drugs, to help me decide if I do indeed have it (which I am almost sure I have.) Thanks!

I went on BCP's at the age of 13. It was good because I went on it for a few months and managed to get an AF twice after I stopped them. The bad thing about BCP's is that they made me gain weight. When I first started taking them I wanted to gain weight because I was really skinny (about 104 pounds) BTW I am 5'1" tall. I did gain weight (went up to 125lb). I was fine with it and I thought I looked great. I lost the weight the following year. At 17 I started taking BCP's becase I stopped having my AF for 6 months. I started gaining weight again and started eating junk food too (I now weight 148lbs). I got married two years ago (20yrs old) and started using them again. This time when I wanted to TTC I stopped them and eneded getting my Af's every six months. My PCOS symptoms multiplied in just one year.

To tell you the truth I think that the PCOS pills cause me to be un able to ovulate. I used to get my af's every other month for only 6 days. Now I get them every six or every two months and they last for two weeks. The worst think you can do (in my opinion) is go on BCP's. Try to look for another method if your diagnosed with PCOS. A lot of women on this board will agree with me that BCP's are the devil lol.

Good luck

I am on Met, Spirolactone, and Yasmin
and I have felt so much better since I've been on them
I've been on them for about a year now
When i first started on the Yasmin, my periods were ridiculously heavy. It was insane and awful. THey were also the first periods I had ever really had, so that may also have had something to do with it. Now they are normal and I feel like I am a bit better off than my friends who have it natural because I know more when I am going to start.
Met never gave me the stomach aches that a bunch of others seem to have. My doctor eased my on to it. I started with 250mg a day and then added 250mg every 2 weeks until i got to 1000mg a day.

I've experienced slow very gradual weightloss while taking these. I've lost around 15 pounds since I first started the process, but it's been over a year in the losing, and if I really committed to it, I know that I could loose a lot more.

I also feel right inside. It feels like all the horomones and everything are working. It's hard to explain unless you've actually experienced it, but maybe you'll see what I mean!

good luck!

I've been on Yasmin for a little over a year now. I really like it. For like the first couple of months it made me a little sick but that quit after those first couple of months. I've also lost about 30 pounds in the time I've been on it.

Can i ask... is yasmin a drug or a herbal remedy? and also i've heard of this new drug orlistat, and they've done tests on it compared to met and apparently it does everything met does, and also reduces weight by 4.5% compared to 1% on met... has anyone heard of this?

I would like to welcome you to the Teen Section!!

I have not heard of this new med Caitronia.

But I should be getting on Met on the 25th of this month.

Yaz is a BCP to my knowledge.

Meg, what has the Spirolactone done for you?

I'm on Metformin, and have been for about two years. Initially it 'worked' on my symptoms (the usual, irregular periods, acne, weight et cetera et cetera) but after a while it seemed to 'wear off'. My endocr- upped the doseage, and it 'fixed' the problem. It seemed to be starting again around june/july, but then I severely fractured my ankle (have i mentioned I'm a klutz?!) and had to go to the hospital for surgery- and therefore was not eating for about three days, and I couldn't take the met. I wasn't eating properly for a couple of weeks, basically subsisting on painkillers and lots of sleep.
Its (somewhat) foolish I know, but I didn't want to go back on the met (and be sick) while couldn't walk. Sadly, now I'm feeling the effects, so I'm starting to take it again. Blah.

I've heard from several that it does that and you have to keep upping the dose.

The only problem is, I'm half a pill away from the top 'allowed' doseage. >:/ I'm sort of hoping that It will start working at a lower doseage this time, and I can take a bit less.

Hello all.
I was diagnosed back in April and have been on Diane-35's ever since (I think they're called Dianette's in the States?). Anyway, they seem to work for me, though I'm starting to worry they're wearing off. I don't know if this is a result of the pills or just of having proper hormone levels, but I've been alot more emotional since I started taking them. I also haven't lost any weight, though my GP says I should be. I wish I had that "click! everything is right inside" feeling that Megish mentioned, but that hasn't happened for me. Yet.

My doctor said the exact same thing, that i had to go on a diet, in fairness it does have an effect when you lose weight, but the whole matter of actually losing it is a lot harder than doctors seem to realise, especially when weight gain is a symptom of the disorder... I'm still not on any medication at the moment but i have an appt with the gynae on the 12th of december and i'm hoping he'll know more than my gp did (since she knew absoloutely nothing!) and he'll give me a prescription for metformin! i know more than my doctor did, and it was a matter of me telling her information and her pretending she knew it already and saying, "yes, thats true too" hopefully this gynaecologist will be better!
Good luck to everyone,
xxx cat
