Oh Oh, what about the Anne of Green Gables series. No little girl or woman for that matter should go throughout life without knowing Anne Shirley

Heylo!
I read "The Notebook" back when I was in medical school because it had to do with Alzeimers(sp?) and I loved it. Then the movie came out last year or so and it was just as amazing if not better. i also love "Catherine called Birdy" but its a childrens book that Ive had for a long time that I juss love reading over and over. Its like the journal of a child in the 1200 A.D.....=0)

My all time favorite book? Oddly enough.. the neverending story by Michael ende.. I've read that book so many times.. and I still love it. tried to get my ex to read it but he couldn't stand the main character so gave up... I don't think he quite had the patience for the whole fall from grace/redemption plot in the second half...

it's a book i reccomend any lover of fantasy to read. it may be aimed at kids and have a rather heavy moral attached.. but it's just such a wonderfully thought out world and reading the first edition with it's red and green text (just how the book it described in the book) is quite an experience.

Oh I heartily, heartily agree with that!! Anne Shirley is a delight, and every girl needs to count her amongst their kindred spirits in life!

Purple I loved The Never Ending Story too, I read it in high school. A lovely book.

Hi gals

I will have to get my thinking cap on but what jumps to mind is the following:

1. All the VC Andrews Books - love all of them.
2. The "Mersey books" - Twopence to Cross the Mersey etc - i have read 3 of them and really enjoyed them.
3. Anything by Cathy Kelly - she is a legend - cant get enough
4. Anything by Marian Keyes - Amy and i are kindred spirits when it comes to books!
5. Anything by Tara Moss - i was pleasantly surprised - dh read them too.
6. Anything by Michael Connelly - scary thrillers but good!
7. Thomas recommends any by Giles Andraea ( sp) - those books are soooo good! Some of them include: Commotion in the Ocean, Rumble in the Jumble, My Grandson is a genius etc.

I will have a think of all the others i read before children! Aahhh for the days when i can sit down and read again!!!

Default And a few afterthoughts....

I was thinking about this on the way to work this morning and I missed two other faves:

The Red Tent (cannot recall the author for the life of me). This should be compulsory reading for all PCOSers. It's actually set in biblical times and is the story of a woman who, having married the love of her life, remains childless. She is part of a community which is bound together (essentially bedouins) and her role becomes one of carer for expectant mothers and new babies, which cuts her deeply each month when her period arrives to remind her that she is again not pregnant. The red tent is where the women go for a week of each month to sit together and bleed, at which time they share their gossip and womanly wisdom. I read it before I was diagnosed and thought what a beautiful yet sad story it was. I have since re-read it twice and it was only recently I figured out maybe she had PCOS!! Who knows - it was pre-Jesus if my memory serves me correctly. It is a poignant read, a beautiful story and eloquently captures the heartache of wanting children.

A Scandalous Life (pregnant brain again and too lazy to walk into the other room to find the name of the author). This is semi-biographical. A woman born to title in the late 1800s casts aside sciety's expectations and after a series of failed but lusty love affairs and broken marriages, finds herself married to a bedouin prince, living a nomadic life as basically a nobody. When her prince dies, she endeavours to maintain her links with the bedouins but is eventually cast out of their community. It's a little slow to start with, but becomes a compelling, rollicking good read when she finally leaves Europe and starts living life to the full. This woman was before her time and she eventually paid dearly for her wild ways, but dang, she had fun getting there!!

I suspect I will be adding to thread daily. How can one define favourite books? I mean really who could beat the Magic Faraway Tree when push comes to shove?

Bright blessings

Megan
