Rainbow Brite: Have you tried Synthroid instead of Levoxyl? I've read that Sythroid users have fewer changes in their levels once they're on it for awhile. Pharmacist always try to push the generic, and yeah it’s cheaper, but I’ve been on Synthroid for 3 years now and I haven’t had any probs. When I first started taking it, we had to change the dosage a couple times, and I also had to go up to .112 while I was pregnant (but that’s normal). If things don’t start getting more consistent you should think about changing over.
Levoxyl is a brand name, just like Synthroid. It's just a slightly different formulation. Levothyroxine is the generic. If Levoxyl doesn't do the trick for me, I'll be asking to switch to Armour or a T4/T3 combo. Things are pretty consistent right now...consistently bad...lol. Can't wait until my next dr. appt!
It's far more common in women according to my endo. He feels I got my hashimoto's (in all likely hood) from my mother having Lupus. I couldn't say for sure, but there you have it. Just got my NEW endo to put me on a t3/t4 combo called thyrolar. Will be starting it next week, since this week Im out of country. Happy holidays all.
Hi guy. I'm new here and want to know if you think more girls than guys get thyroid stuff. I have a male friend who takes Synthroid and he's near 60. Don't know how long he's been taking it. Jan

I'm wondering if a person can take too much synthroid? I have been taking for about 3 years now I started on .05 and now I'm on 400 I had a baby 16 months ago and every since I have to go have it checked every 6 weeks. I just want to feel good. My doctor can't explain why it's so high and told me I'm the highest patient he has any suggestions?
Yes, a person can take too much Synthroid which would result in hyperthyroidism and all the s/e that go a long with it. 400mcg is the highest I've ever heard of...300mcg is usually max. Have you tried to supplement Cytomel or switch to Armour?

i want to switch to the armour. it seems wonderful! i need energy because i need a job and be able to think because i want to go to school. i've been on levothyroxine since 4/17. at that time is was 4.832 and now it's at 4.5 BUT i still feel the same....like crap if not worse. my throat is aching again and it's quite bothersome.
I had a severe thyroid attack in Jan of this year to, my TSH was 178.84 whoe!!! My Endo put me on 450mcg of synthroid daily to get the hormone down. Once down to 7 she leveled my synthroid to 150mcg but my last test showed my tsh too low at 0.36 (0.4-2.7 is optimal for TTC). Now she has me on 75mcg on Sundays and 150mcg M-Sat.
Largest dose I have heard of is 750mcg. I asked my Endo why some people need a higher dose. She said that everyone metabolizes differently. A woman who is a bit overweight commonly needs more synthroid then women who are thin. But it all differs from person to person. The goal is to level out the TSH and it can take up to 4 mths to do this. She said that running a TSH every month (for those just diagnosed) helps to get the right dose. Once level then a TSH is drawn every 4 months to make that the synthroid dose is working correctly.
Also if you are hypothyroid and TTC or are pregnant then a much higher does is needed in order for both you and the baby to metabolize correctly and prevent miscarriage. I am currently TTC so she has been preparing me for the "when" scenario.
I should clarify that I have Hashimotos. And in the past have had issues with a hyperthyroid. So I am just glad to diagnosed and being treated!

Betas: dpo18 - 391, dpo21 - 1190, dpo25 - 4850 (had this wrong nurse says it was 4980)
Dx PCOS - 1993, Endometreosis - 2003, IR - 2004 Dx Hashimotos & Vit D deficiancy - 2009
Started out at 50mcg, with my TSH level at 3.8. I just got my 3 month check up and it was 2.7, which technically falls into "normal."
I was expecting it to actually be a little lower during my 3 month blood work, because I have felt fabulous since about 7-8 weeks of taking it. I have all my energy back, no longer feel depressed, and my metabolism has picked up.

Did he test you for postpartum thyroiditis? It is supposed to affect around 7-10% of women postpartum.
I'm on 88MCG and have been for a few years. I hover between 2-3 TSH, although I don't think they have ever done the T3 tests I have read here. I once asked about Armour and the nurse laughed at me and said it was "ancient" and no one ever prescribes that anymore -- whatever. I don't understand, if it works, who cares what the "in" drugs are? It is what works for people that makes a drug great.
About me and thyroid: I had thyroid surgery in 1995 and gained 80 pounds since, even though my levels are in the "normal" catagory. I became super tired and I cannot seem to concentrate on anything very long. I also have insulin resistence, I was working out and still gaining weight and getting really depressed about it. I think the double wammy of hypothyroidism and PCOS is cruel. I always thought it was the thyroid, though, that did me in, but I may have had PCOS a lot sooner than diagnosed. I just started on Metformin, too. Maybe something will start helping.
I was born without a thyroid. I am at .175 - 6 times a week to equal out to 165ish. I have been on .200 and .250 before, and had to do the two pill thing. I might have been on 300 for a short period of time also - I can remember I switch it a good amount.
In 1999 December i was diagnosed with cancer in my right lobe and on Jan. 7 2000 the realized that it spreaded to the left lobe and into the throat area. After 2 surgeries and under going 2 radiation treatments i was started on .150. I am currently at 400 . I was on 250 and my endo increase my dosage because my body had gotten use to the 250 and i had no engery and i had gain 30 pounds. This has happened twice. So for now im gratelful because i feel better but i often think a few years from now and my body get use to the synthroid what dosage will i be on then. I do have side effects but i have learned to live with them and i go back and forth to the endo once a month to get my level checked
