I was just wondering, what jobs do you all work in or have worked in... (if you are lucky enough to be no longer working!!)

Since 2001, I've co-ordinated security engineers (alarm, CCTV etc.,) here, there & everywhere for a living, it's quite fun but stressfull. I have an extra part-time job in Waitrose on the checkouts which I also enjoy, I have been there 18 months
For 5 years before that I worked for Autotrader/Adtrader as supervisor for entering adverts & things which was cool for the majority but the company got sold and it went rapidly downhill, hence my departure!
I've also worked in 'Bath & Bodyworks' before their UK stores closed and as an early morning cleaner in John Lewis alongside my other jobs for extra money. I like being busy lol

great thread Ive had lots of jobs. Once worked as a Receptionist in a Funeral Home (I know ) Silver Service Waitress when in College, then lots of pa/secretary jobs after
eva
I seem to have had loads of jobs! As a student I did the usual bar work, as well as working at M & S and Waitrose. Also done telemarketing- was the best job as a student as it was very well paid and to be honest I never really did all that much! Ive also done temping in various offices.
After I left uni I got a job dealing with complaints for a food company. I hated the job but Id only been there 2 minutes before I fell pregnant so was forced to stay because of the maternity leave situation.
About 2 weeks ago I was offered my DREAM job- it would have been the best opportunity for me and I know I would have been soo good at the job and would have loved it. I accepted the job but then felt soo guilty about leaving Lola (as well as being full time hours it was over an hour commute each way) so I changed my mind and Im going back to my previous job part time(at the moment Im on maternity leave). If I didnt have Lola I would have jumped at the opportunity but things are different now.
Although I dont really enjoy my specific job it is fairly close to where I live and I get great benefits with the company. As we want more children in the near future, we thought it best for me to stay at my current company instead of change jobs and progress in my career then have to stop again when (hopefully) we have more children.
Long term, I want to teach, but I need to do another year at uni to do a PGCE which isnt feasible at the moment but who knows what the future holds.

I am a teacher, have been for six years, it's all I've ever done boo hoo. Though I have had a Saturday job at an art shop, and summer jobs at a nursery, in a newsagents and on a submarine.

I'm a land adminstrator; work with engineers for a natural gas pipeline company; it's fun; but stressful at times before that i worked in hr for another utility company then before that i was working in records dept for an oil and gas company in calgary; and then before that - my very first job ever was working at the Bay; dept. store, in their small electronics dept; didn't know a thing about electronics; but i'm sure we've all had jobs that we didnt' know much about when we first started. i prefer office / secretarial jobs, though, and am hopefully staying with my current job for along time; land is good to get into ;the pay is quite good - as is any job you do with Engineering/ & or for a utitliy company

Ooh cool jobs... some of the sound kinda funny - Eva... and the funeral home!!
Naomi - what was your dream job?
Polly - what were you doing on a submarine??
I have worked as an admin assistant in a uni department, a library assistant in a uni, a receptionist and personal adviser in Social Services (never again), a dog walker/petcarer in my own business, a cleaner, a P.A. and now as a call manager. Working as a call manager sucks - I work all by myself (v. lonely) on these ridiculously long night shifts (9 hours), without a break (totally illegal) and it's sooo boring and stressful... but the money is good and I need it! I deal with the Police and the medical needs of their happy campers (people staying in Custody) or else like if they need forensic samples taking such as drink driving blood samples or samples from rape suspects... not much fun. I guess at least I am, in some minor way, assisting society. I never thought I would be doing this job... I actually wanted to be a lecturer at university, but finances and health problems have not allowed me to do that.
The only jobs I actually liked were the admin assistant and the library assistant. I am currently thinking about doing a Graduate conversion course to Law, but not sure as it's so expensive. Also thinking of doing some I.T. courses through the O.U. - it's hard to find the money and time to do extra training when you are already working flat out and financially stretched.
Anyone else find it hard to figure out what they want to do in life?

I was offered a job developing new cakes for Mr Kipling. I would have loved it- I spent a year on placement at uni developing new breads at Hovis and loved it. Part of this job would have been doing market research going up to London to selfrdiges, harrods, etc and buying all their new products. Then getting back into the lab and copying it!
I spent soo long trying to get into product development and everything was going so great then I got pregnant!
Not that I would swap Lola for the world and Im sure there will be opportunities in the future!

I'm currently working part time on the check outs at Waitrose. I've had loads of jobs but was out of work from August last year to June this year I've been battling with depression etc... caused by my last job (working at the Naval Base in Portsmouth as a civil servant) - was very much a 'old boys club' and because in their eyes I was not a 'typical' woman I was quite badly emotionally bullied (by 'typical' I mean slim - like most of the women there and me being very quiet too meant they bullied me even more)
I do have a degree in Film and TV and American studies but not used it (great waste of three years!!!!). I rebelled against my teachers telling me to do business studies / economics for a degree!!!
I've spent years trying to decide what I want to do and have started various courses (training as a Further Education teacher / childrens nurse etc...) but have know finally decided to retrain as a primary school teacher - I've also wanted to work with young children but seeing them so ill as a nurse wasn't for me - I got way too upset!! so going for teaching instead
Also have been - sales administrator, finance administrator, cash clerk, booking in clerk, retail supervisor, customer service assistant, fish and chip shop assistant ....... told you I've had loads of jobs!!! (I'm only 28 too!!!)

No doubt about it, you have star quality. Might just take a while to get there. Who's Your Inner Pop Princess?

I have a degree in Communication Studies and the only work i did through uni was in the holidays i worked as a care assistant in a nursing home.
After uni i went on to be a magazine editor for my students' union mag, then i was a customer service person, then a manager at the same place.
I then had a year off to battle depression and get my head round pregnancy losses.
I now work in the council education dept as a governor support officer, which means working 20 hours p/w in the office then attending school governors meetings, usually after schhol, on top of that.

Currently I am a stay at home mother which I love but I am kinda itching to get back to work.
My first job was working as a cleaner in a mental hospital, I got a few marriage proposals from some of the patients lol.
I worked as a school secretary which I loved as the ***** that was training me broke her ankle while I was there so I learnt lots in her absence.
I have done research in historical archives which was interesting and then worked as a legal secretary for 8 or so years. Then worked in Dell Computers - I used to check servers after they were built and I winged it so much as I hadn't a clue lol. Back to working for a solicitor again, my boss was the most anal retentive man ever! So left there on Maternity Leave.
I was offered a job on Monday as a note taker for 3rd level students who have disabilities. So basically I will be sitting in on lectures and typing notes on a laptop to be emailed later to the student. So that will be interesting and challenging.

Great thread...good to get to know everyone a little more!
My first job was as a receptionist and scheduler (engineers) for a security company. I then went to work at a publishing house where I started as a admin assistant entering articles for the 13 or so magazines we published...I loved it, I also used to take the classified ads and process payments etc. Then I moved into the accounts dept there and worked in accounts payable - sending invoicing, chasing payments answering invoice queries. I liked working there but the money wasn't so great so I moved to a corporate cleaning company as PA to the Managing Director - loved it. Then moved to a different part of Ireland and became a recruitment consultant - I really enjoyed that too, but I think I was a bit too ethical for the industry and rather than being target motivated I was more interested in finding the right people for the jobs and the right jobs for the people! Then I moved to the UK - enjoyed a month of settling in and started a job as a Fundraising & Marketing Manager for a charity working with homeless young people. I really love it - pressurised, difficult environment but I really like it here. So for now I'm happy. I work four days a week, I have Wednesdays with Dara and it works really well for us.
I like the idea of becoming a midwife also... but would mean another few years at uni for not all that much money. And Im not sure I could do blood tests either!
