hi everyone! i'm not a teen (sorry for invading)...but i have PCOS and my daughter, who just turned 13, probably has it too. she's overweight, especially in her middle; has acne; very oily hair; has acanthosis nigricans and skin tags. she just got her first period yesterday , but we knew it was coming because she was in extreme pain with cramps that i assumed was ovulation because of what i go through.
i'll be making an appt with my endocrinologist for her to get an official diagnosis and treatment for her now that she's menstruating, but i'd like to ask you all a question to help me help the endo when it's time to see her (appts usually take 3 months to make). i really want to go in armed with information that actually works for real people...i don't want my daughter to have to deal with the things that i've had to the last 20 yrs.
as a teenager with PCOS what is your preferred treatment for your symptoms?
are you on metformin? if so, what dose? do you find that it helped with your symptoms?
do you take oral birth control pills? if so, what brand? do you like it? doyou find that it helped with your symptoms?
thank you VERY much....i greatly appreciate your input...
I was diagnosed between 12/13 and im just coming up to 15, i take birth control pils i was on microgynion 30 but it didnt work my garny recoomends dynate so when i have my reveiw i might go on that 1 .
I take co-dodamol, co-drydramol,solpadeine, normal paracetemol and for my af i take menamaphenic acid. But always try to help pain with hot wheat bags hot baths and hot water bottles. For my acne i have oxy face wash,
Hope that helps
Jess x

I take 1000 mg of Metformin and so far (my doctor said it doesn't fully kick in until after 6 months) the hair above my lip grows back MUCH more slowly and my skin has gotten much better. Also, the hair on my stomach isn't as bad either.
I take Yasmin too, and that works perfectly to regulate my cycles.
j gormo and maflowers...thanks for the info. i've been researching yasmin for my daughter as i've read on this board that it's done wonders for people. i forgot to mention in my first post too, that she has a lot of upper lip hair that seemed to come out of nowhere in the last few weeks, so with the spiro that's in yasmin, i thought it'd be a good idea.
thank you again for sharing your treatments with me...i do really appreciate it!
I am not currently on anything. I should be going on met on the 31st.
But I've been on BCP and hated it. My body hated it!!

hey, i had lots of trouble with doctors for about three years after i was diagnosed, they pretty much just told me to go on a diet, which was very frustrationg... just in december gone i got an appointment with a gynae, and he's brill, gave me a prescription immediately for metformin and its working great... he made an appointment for me with the dietician in the hospital and i was there on thursday gone... i'm really happy with it, and even though i'm only on the met for like 6 weeks i've already lost like 6kg, and i haven't even started on dieting yet, or exercise which i will be starting tomorrow! so hopefully with all that together the symptoms will get better and finally things will start going somewhere!

caitronia, i'm so happy the met is working for you and that you finally found a dr that listened to you. i've been told by lots of doctors that i just need to diet and exercize. they have no idea!!
erika, that's a fear i have for putting my daughter on BCP. she's only 13 and i'm afraid it's going to wreck havoc with her...i've heard about girls going batty on them. she's already emotional enough, i don't want the bcp to make her crazier. i can't take BCP because of my high blood pressure, so i can't even use my own experience here...
when i was first diagnosed (when i was 14) i went to a gyno and they put me on ortho tricyclen (i think that show you spell it) but the only thing it really did was even out my periods (which were crazy irregular) then i went to an endo and they put me on 1000mg of met. the mets been working pretty good with getting my insulin level down(which was almost triple the normal level and is now reagular) but its not really working for the weight loss.

I have been on BCP since I was diagnosed when I was 15. I used to take Glucophage, but it made me sick and my OB/GYN said that I wouldn't have to take it again until I wanted to get pregnant. I take Yasmin and it works wonderfully for me. I tried another brand for a while, but Yasmin works the best for me. I also take a multi-vitamin, an anti-depressant, and some other medications that are not directly related to the PCOS. Good luck to you and your daughter!
