I've been thinking about this lately, and figured I'd ask some other Canadians.
The situation in my city is, we have 110,000 residents. There are THREE GYN's. I want to say 4, but can really only think of three. The 4th went back to his home country. It takes MONTHS to get into one of these doctors if it is for non pregnancy related. I mean, from March it till me three months to get to see Dr S to finally be diagnosed with PCOS.
In Chatham, no matter which doctor you have as your primary GYN, the doctor on call at the hospital will deliver you. If it is during normal business hours for the doc, they MAY get called in, but chances are, you will get the one on call. After 5 pm, there is only one doctor on call, regardless of the amount of births. Often, they will be at home till they are called to say that you are pushing, and then they finally drive into the hospital.
Also, chatham has the wonderful distinction of not having any doctors that do epidurals. Now, due to the fact that I am trained as a Doula, THAT doesn't bother me all that much, however.
I'm just wondering, are other cities like this? Is the doctor shortage this desperate in all areas? is this normal?
Any feedback is appreciated, I'm just curious.

Hi! Was browsing around and saw your post. This is an issue from where I am as well - we live in rural manitoba, and we have no ob/gyn/re at all. The closest is 2 hours away, although those are super busy and wait lists are like 6 months+ from what I hear, so more likely to get in with one in Winnipeg (about 4 hours from my home). We have GP's that deliver babies - I am lucky that my doc is one that does, so I don't have to switch docs when we got preg.
I have had 3 "official" losses now, so it looks like I will be needing a referral to the "big city" to get things ironed out.
We did have a fabulous ob/gyn that helped us get preg with our DS, but like many others, he left the area about 3 years ago. I have been going on his "teachings" in guiding what medical tests I request now from my GP.
Either way, wouldn't it be nice to have access to this kind of stuff and not have to travel for hours at a time? I hope the waiting list is not too long so I'm not waiting forever....
Anyhow, good luck with the ttcing!!!

I'm in Fredericton, New Brunswick and we have a population of about 100, 000 and we only have a few here with a 6 mth plus wait. When I first got my dx...my regular doctor wanted to send me to see one and she told him she was to busy and sent my reg. doctor a list of things to check out for me....it was nuts....

In Winnipeg, I had to wait 6 months before my first appointment at the gynecological/infertility clinic.
Wondering how long the wait will be once I get a referral in Ontario to the Hamilton infertility clinic.
