Hi Yanni, I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2002 and about 3 weeks ago diagnosed with diabetes. When I found out I cried and felt like I wouldn't be able to manage living with diabetes. When my doctor diagnosed me my glucose level was 350. At that time I decided I needed to make some changes immediately. My aunt passed away recently b/c she allowed her diabetes to be uncontrolled for so long which led to other complications. The best thing to do is become educated about diabetes. I researched as much as a could on the internet. I stopped drinking sodas and if i do drink one it's diet. I started drinking more water and if i want something with some flavor I add crystal light, hawaiian punch singles (sugar free) or target brand sugar free strawberry lemonade. My doctor has me currently on 45mg of Actos and 1000mg of Metformin (currently only taking 500 until I increase it). I said all this to let you know it is manageable. It's hard sometimes. I started exercising 3 days a week for 30 mins and will gradually do 5 days. My levels have dropped drastically just from the small changes that i have made.

PM me if you have any additional questions or you can email me at ngrier82@bellsouth.net

HUGS***When you decide to make the changes, do so slowly so you won't feel punished. when I was first diagnosed as type 2, I jumped in with both feet. I was put on a 1200 to 1400 calorie very balanced diet, walked 3 miles a day and went completely caffine free and I never strayed from my diet....I felt like I was being punished. DH and my kids ate whatever they wanted to eat and I had to closely watch my diet...So, I backed off the strickness of the way I was doing things. My blood sugar is under control and I don't feel like I've been whipped and punished. So start out slow and gradually add things to your plan.

I am taking it all one day at a time. I havent been eatting alot of sugary food and have cut out most caffeine and soda. I do feel like i am being punished but i think if i can get my dh to do the diet with me as he says he will i think it will be easier on me so i dont feel like i am alone.

I should hear back from the dr later this week nd he will give me the meds and deit paln he wants me on. I cant help but feel scared and worryed that i am going to no tbe able to do when i need to do. so much at once it makes my head spin. I have had the worst headache since the dx! I just need a break form it all!

Yanni, I understand how you feel. Just take it easy. Your headache is probably from not eating enough. Try eating 2 oz of protein, small amount of fat (5 grams), a piece of fruit (orange, apple, 6 grapes, 1 1/4 c of strawberries) and a carrot. Do this at every mean and you should feel better. I have to measure and count everything. You can also go to the American Diabetes Association website and gather more information. If you need help, just let me know. Also, some people use sparkspeople.com...Everything will be alright, just take it slow.

Yanni, I did Atkins for a few months several years ago. When you drastically cut carbs from your diet, you do feel really bad for a few days. If you can hang in there, it will get better. My doctor gave me a crash course in label reading and said to keep the sugar grams between 3-5, make sure it wasn't high in fat and had at least 3 g of fiber. He said if you can those 3 things right, the rest would take care of itself. He also said good carbs like those in whole grains and fruit/veggies were okay. Get familiar with the Glycemic Index. It will be your friend. If something is high, avoid it. I love bananas but rarely have them because they are high in sugar even though they are good for you.
