I just started on 750mg Met once a day yesterday. How long did all of you stay on your initial dose before increasing it? My doc told me to increase to 1500mg/day in 3 weeks. As long as I tolerate it well, I'd like to increase the dose in 2 weeks. (Can you tell I'm ready to get this ball rollin'......?)
How long did you guys stay on your first dose and how were your side effects??

I am now on glumetza which is the extended release of met. My Re started me out on 500mg a night for a week and then today I upped that to 1000 and then in another week I am supposed to up it again to 1500. I havent had very many se with the extended release like I did with regular met. If you are handling it well I dont see what difference a week would make but you may want to call your Dr just to be sure good luck!!
I'm on Met XR. I started on 500mg for a week then went to 1000mg for a week. I was lucky and didn't suffer from many s/e, so after that second week, I started 2000mg and have been there ever since.
I wanted to "get the ball rollin'" too! Good luck!

I am on Met XR too and I started with 500mg for 2 weeks, and then 1000mg for 2 weeks, then 1500 for 2 weeks, and have been on 2000mg ever since! Good luck to you!
I found this site on my search for Metformin questions and I'm so glad I did. I started Metformin 2 weeks ago for IR...doctor said to take 1000 mg (500 x2) for a week, then up to 2000 mg (1000 x 2). Well I was scared of the side effects so I actually cut the pills and started at 500 mg/day. I did this for 10 days and had mild side effects. Gassy and some D, but not the running-to-the-bathroom-in-pain kind.
Well 2 days ago I decided to try 1000 mg/day. Oh My God...I thought I was going to die. Not so much from the stomach pains and D (which I can somewhat handle), but in the late afternoon/evening I got so nauseated, dizzy, weak, and a headache (almost like a migraine). I couldn't function, I just crumpled on the sofa and closed my eyes. I went to bed praying that I would wake up in the morning, that's how much I thought I was going to die. That was for 2 days and there was NO WAY I could do that again.
Today I split the pills up even smaller and I took 3/4 of a 500 mg. Will take another 3/4 tonight...so that would be 750 mg today. I definitely feel better but had some pretty urgent bathroom trips that I didn't have with the starting dose.
For me, I can tell that slow going is my only hope. Somamoon, your schedule sounds really good. I think I will stick to the 750 mg for 3 weeks also. I'm in no rush for anything other than losing weight.
eve - oh god, i hope i don't have those probs when i increase my dose. kudos to you for getting through that. today was my third day on 750mg and i'm tolerating it pretty well. i usually only have one episode of in the mornings and little tummyache, otherwise fine. now i'm even thinking of increasing in one week. but i guess we'll see how i do...right now i take my dose at night, hence the morning run to the bathroom, but it'll make me nervous to take a dose in the a.m., because i don't want to have to rush to the bathroom at work....lol. well good luck eve on the gradual increase and wish me luck!!

So far today has been pretty bad with the bathroom trips, but I don't have that miserable ill feeling I had with the 1000 mg.
I am on Met Er. I started at 500mg for 1 week. It was increased to 1000mg for 2 weeks, then moved to 1500mg (my current dose). I am to stay at 1500mg for the time being. I have a follow up appointment in Oct, my doctor will decide them if he wants me to move to 2000mg or stay at 1500mg.

...because I've heard that the higher your dose gets, the worse the s/e are...
Actually the opposite happened to me. I was miserable at 1000mg, I really didn't know if I was going to be able to handle 1500mg. The first day (August 7th) was horrible, within 48 hours of starting the 1500mg I felt fine. I had almost constant nausea the three weeks I was working my way from 500mg-1000mg, the bathroom s/e were just disgusting! All of that is almost gone now, has been since 48-72 hrs after I started taking 1500mg. I still have some bathroom s/e but instead of going 7-10 times a day (sorry in tmi), I go 2-3 times unless it's a really bad day. No gas problems, I've only been nauseous a few times in 14 days. I'm still battling being so tired all the time, but even that is getting better. Hopefully you will fair as well as I did!
