I just wanted to start this board to ask a question I am sure new Metformin users are curious of: When you reached your perscribed dose (usually 2000mg), when did you notice a difference in your:
Weight
Menstrual Cycle
Pregnancy
Also, did you notice reduced hair growth?
I am up to 3 500mg pills a day (yucky stomach), started working out and still no weight loss. I keep craving junk food! I could use some encouragement like "this may work".
Thanks gals!

i am on 1500 mg a day and the s/e have become less of a problem. I am taking provera for 10 days in jan and in feb i sort of started on my own but it was not really enough so i called my doc and she told me to take the provera anyway just to get a full af. but i have lost about 5 pounds with the met (i stated in jan)

I'm on my second week of met. up to 1000 mg, and I got af almost right away. I have also lost about 5 pounds, but I started South Beach on the same day, so I can't blame it all on met.

I'm just getting back on Met for a second time now. I'm taking 1000mg, and will be going up to 1500mg.
My last experience with it was 3 years ago, and what I can tell you is that my period returned the first month, and I ovulated, and had a period every month after that, up until I became pregnant. (This was after several periods a year, and rarely ovulating.) I lost 35-40 pounds in 6 months. And I felt great -- once I'd gotten past the initial nausea and intestinal stuff. I had more energy, felt like my head was clearer etc. I was a walking ad for Met.
I have to add that I was also exercising daily, and had adapted a lower carb diet as well. So I'm sure it was a combination of all of the above.
This time, I've been taking it for just over a month (I work my dosage up very slowly). I've lost about 5 pounds so far, and am again working out hard. Seems like the weight is a bit slower this time, but I am losing inches (so could be muscle gain). And I've had 2 periods in a row, like clockwork.
So absolutely, this could work for you! I know it isn't "all that" for everyone, but for me it has been great. Crossing my fingers for you!

I just started met. A lot of cysters have told me it takes 2-3 months to kick in and get AF coming regularly once you get to your peak dosage. good luck!

I started metformin about 2 weeks ago slowly increasing my dosage up to 2000 mg. I'm pretty nauseated tonight, but I also had too many sweet things after dinner (I've read that the nausea and such are worse if you've overweaten or indulged). I lost about 5 lbs the first week as I loosely followed WeightWatchers and the GI diet (trying to make good food choices w/in the points allowed). I'm also exercising pretty regularly. My OBGYN had said it would take a few months to kick-in, as well, though I was hoping for some more immediate motivation since weight loss in the last 3 years has been next-to-impossible.
I have noticed if I over eat I feel sick. And if I eat to much sweet stuff. I don't think I have lost any weight. I have been on met for a month now at 1000 mg. I actually don't own a scale. I need to get one. I think maybe the dosage isn't high enough I also started on Synthroid a montha go and I don't think its right either. We will see in March

So what defines "kicking in"? Meaning the way it affect your period or the ability to lose weight?
Wow! It seems like Met has some wonderful success stories. My doctor hasn't prescribed it for me yet but she said she was if i'm insulin resistant. Since I got tested, i've got my results back and my insulin levels are SUPER HIGH but my doctor won't be back in the office until Wednesday so I have to wait and see what dosage she's going to put me on. I'm so excited!
I ovulated on 1000 mg, but did not get "regular" cycles until I went to 2000 mg and then lost 20 lbs. Then I became prg. with my DD. It took 4 months on the 2000 to do all of this. The set amt prescribed may not be the right amt. for you. It took my Dr and I a year of playing around to find my right doseage.

I meant cysters have told me it takes them that long to get AF.

Well, I just upd my dose to 2000mg ER finally. I had to work up to it since August 2007. I feel like the 2000mg is helping with my appetite- for sure! It's almost like I feel better. As far as my AF, I dunno. I just started a bcp about a month ago and I have been spotty almost the entire time! Arghh! Stupid bcp! Good luck ladies!!
