Ooops! I initially titled this thread "How do you create a poll?" But apparently I already made one. I didn't realize I had to post a thread before making the poll.
Anyway, I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes, I'd just like to see the data in a poll format rather than read 11 pages worth of material for the question "When did you start menstrating?"

Wow! This is starting to look like I need to have some kind of "talk" with DS in about a year or two because girls in his class will be 'blossoming' & he'll need to preliminary facts.

we've already talked to my son about 'growing up' but here in the uk they will be told about it when they are 11. I actually went to see the video yesterday, before my son sees it.

I started my period at age 9. I was the only 4th grader that had to worry about maxi pads and leaking on my pants. I hated it!!! I am hoping my daughter won't start till she is 13 or so. Have a great day!!

I started at 13 when I was in 8th grade. My best friend swore that drinking milk had something to do with starting so she refused to drink milk and started when we were in like 6th grade lol.

Wow, I started at the youngest age -- so far. I think I read one other person staretd at age 8, too. This is 3rd grade --who the !@#^ carries a purse with 'necessities' in the 3rd grade? I sure didn't. AND, my mom --an RN, no less-- didn't even show me how to chart my cycles so that I could be ready for a visit from Aunt Flo. OY!

Yeah I was a the first in my group of friends... I was 10, fifth grade and my little sister wouldn't leave the kitchen so I could tell my mom... I used to wish I was a boy or that it would go away cause I was always having problems with heavy flow, cramping, and tummy upset... now I want nothing more than to have my period return (its on a 9 year hiatus...) one of my best friends went until 16! crazy how the body works...
My mother never told me anything about it, back when I was a kid, they didn't have sex ed in school. I turned 10 Oct. 22, 1970, and Aunt Flo popped in 9 days later. That's right, Halloween night! I thought I was dying, I had no idea what was going on. My best friend's mother had to explain everything to me. Back then they didn't have the pads with the glue strips, you had to wear these silly belts that you were supposed to hook to these long tails on the pads. I still feel the incredible embarrassment. LOL I never did tell my mother, do you think she's guessed by now?

The first time I ever heard of the belts was in the Judy Blume book Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.
We saw one short film about menstruation in middle school; my mother never said ONE WORD to me or my sister about it. When it first happened to me there was a lot of shame involved. I wish it had been more of a bonding experience. I've got a son and he's our only child, so I won't be dealing with that at all.

I started at age 8. I'd known about periods and sex, etc for years so it wasn't a shock to me. (I'd been devouring encyclopedias since I was, like, four so my parents had a hard time keeping age-appropriate info from me, lol.)
Anywho. My mom was shocked. Stunned, actually. She found me swiping an Always pad from her under the sink stash. I had to fess up then that I'd been having my period for, like, 4 months. (In the beginning it was totally regular. When I became a teenager, my menstrual cycle became whacked out.) She was a tad hurt that I hadn't come to her when I first started, but I figured I knew what to do why bother her? Yeah. I was something of a nerd, lol.
I, too, hope that if I have daughters they won't start as early as I did. Oh, and I wasn't more than ten or fifteen pounds overweight at the time. I know sometimes childhood obesity can affect the onset of menstruation, but I'm not sure it was the case in my situation. Who knows?

I started at 11. Developed around 9. I wasn't shocked, just wanted it to go away. My Mom, of course, called EVERYONE in her address book. The next time I went to church, all of her friends and my friends' Mom's were giving me hugs, etc. Oh, the humiliation! I also started with regular, heavy, painful periods!! It wasn't until after I had my 1st DC that I ever missed a period. Was dx during this time.
