I had no side effects from Met 500mg once a day. My doctor upped me to 1,000 mg a day and oh my gosh!!! When will the side effects go away? I don't want to eat anything because I know I will get diarrhea, intestinal cramps, etc. My DH is worried cause I don't want to eat.
he suggested I break the tablets in half and take them that way but a website I saw said NOT to break the extended release tablets. I have stopped taking 1,000 a day (went back to 500) because it is too hard on me. I might try it again when my tummy settled back down.
Hang in there, when the side effects stop, Met is magic! haha
Well at least for me. Make sure you watch everything you eat and if you can record what you eat, then you can go through and highlight the things that make you feel awful afterwards.

Sorry you're having a tough time of it...many of us do. I didn't have those terrible s/e until I hit 1500mg. Try to tough it out and NOT reduce your dosage. Otherwise, your body will never have the chance to get used to the Met. The way I survived was by increasing my dietary fiber intake; I started every morning with a bowl of high fiber cereal and made sure to get healthy whole grains in at every meal. Be sure you're eating with your doses, and drink lots of water. I know it's horrible, but it will go away eventually and you'll be glad you stuck it out. HTH and gl!
That is another thing I am wondering about. Am I supposed to be going low-carb w/this? Are there certain foods to avoid? My DR. said nothing about any special diet other than the old "you have to eat less calories than you use...blah blah blah....." like I am an idiot. But as all of us cysters know, that doesn't work for PCOS. If it did, I would have been a sleleton in college because I never had money for food.
Low carb can help tremendously! I take the regular met and I up the dose by 500 mg each week. I'd say that it took about a month to a month and a half to get used to it, since I kept increasing. For me, Met is a wonder drug... at least for conceiving. Good luck!
I have been on Met since last November, and have not lost a single ounce..actually I have gained 11 lbs! I started on 500 and left there until this last week and then upped to 1,000.
I am sooo disappointed! I thought Met would really help my symptoms and help me lose weight, but it didn't. I don't get blood sugar crashes like I used to, but other than that...no help at all.
I feel like I am doomed to be fat and ugly the rest of my life or at least until menopause. (My mom and sis both lost weight after menopause.I am sure they were IR and PCOS but never diagnosed.)
I'm not totally surprised that you haven't seen results yet...500mg is a really low dose. Most doctors do at least 1500mg, with many going to 2000mg.
Your doctor should have given you this very valuable piece of information: You can NOT eat fatty or sugary foods while getting accustomed to Met. I've had some success working occasional bad things back into my diet, but absolutely could not tolerate them while I was just starting out.
You can NOT eat fatty or sugary foods while getting accustomed to Met.
If I may, I'd like to go a step further and strongly advise against Pizza Hut pizza while adjusting. O.M.G. I didn't think I was going to make it. I had been on Met a week and was pretty cocky. Off to Pizza Hut we went. Yummy! Pizza! We left there and went to Wal-mart. oh, boy. Thank GOD for the bathrooms in the old Lay-a-way department!

I basically went (still do, really) with whatever sounded good (as long as it wasn't fatty or too sugary). Whole grain breads and crackers have really been a godsend. Also, carbonated water when my stomach feels like there is a war going on in it really helps to settle it. Just try to avoid anything fried or greasy (like the PP said: pizza is a big no-no!) and desserts. Though milkshakes have also been great (you can take Met with food OR milk). I know what you mean about wanting to be normal...it's really hard to get used to this. But you'll learn what you can and can't eat with time.
As I sit here eating ice cream with chocolate syrup, I can tell you that eventually you can add that stuff back in if you want. Although it's better if you can hold out and you'll lose more weight that way too. Best of Luck!
i can eat ice cream, i can't eat jelly, greasy food or anything really heavy... my stomach always feels upset and i have to go to the bathroom constantly... i have also been spotting lightly for about four weeks now. it's nothing heavy or anything, i just wear a panty liner and it barely gets a spot on it... i'm talking the little mini ones like light days... it's mostly clots now, and i take that as a sign that it's almost done. it could also be because i don't take my birth control pill at the same time every day right? but i do take it every day. anyways, i am on 2000 mg of glucophage a day and i just started three weeks ago... he had me increasing dosage weekly until i got to 2000. i started at 500. this is my first week on 2000. is there anything besides pizza and anything really greasy/sugary that i should avoid? i never know what is going to set me off, i can't even eat a grilled cheese sandwich anymore without hitting the toilet... anyways, thanks for listening to my rambling...
I've been very fortunate to really have almost no side effects from the met. Once i did try to eat no sugar added ice cream, the noise and pain of the grumbling in my belly was horrible. I've seen a lot of women on here have a few particular food sensitivities. And you are right, never break any extended release tablets, it destroys the extended release part and gives your body the whole dose of the medication all at once. YOu may want to ask your dr about regular met, which is scored and can be broken if needed. Although, a lot of people say the regular met they had more GI problems with, so it may be a catch 22. Best of luck in adjusting to it!

I am so sorry you are feeling the effects of met...I was on 2000mg until earlier this year, then my doc dropped my dosage down and put me on Januvia with 1000mg of met. Well, the januvia wasn't working, so he put me back on 2000mg met along with januvia. Guess what is happening right now? You guessed it, the stomach cramps and the whole works. It seems like when I eat dairy products and when I eat something greasy it is worse. Good luck sweetie and just give it time. It will pass in a few weeks...Just know that you aren't alone...HUGS.
