Hi, I was just wondering if you get PCOS right from when you go through puberty of whether it can develop later in life? I know it can take a while to be diagnosed with it. I'm 23 but I was just wondering if I had already had it for the last seven or odd years without knowing?
I think it's something you are born with. it's just not "noticable" until we hit puberty or our symptoms get out of control or when we try to start a family and can't get pregnant. I know that as I'm getting older, more symptoms seem to pop up or get worse, so it could be that in some cases women might not think much of having irregular periods, and ignore that "problem" for quite awhile, for instance.
I'm pretty sure my grandma and my great-aunt had PCOS, but they didn't talk about this kind of thing in that generation. I think several (if not all) of my female cousins have it too...they've all had problems getting pregnant and other "female issues."
I also feel that it's something we are born with but as mentioned don't realize it until symptoms present. AKA no periods, acne, hair growth etc. I was placed on BCP's at age 16 because of lack of periods or very long cycles and it masked everything. It wasn't until I had a stroke at the age of 20 and had to be taken off the BCP that I was actaully diagnosed.
PCOS is genetic and tends to be passed on through your father. When you mentioned your grandmother and cousins...are they on your father's side of the family? I'd be interested to know if that fact I heard is acurrate.

well, I was thinking of my dad's mom. she died long before I was born, and all I have to go on is my dad's unreliable memory of her...he's the youngest of 3 boys and he was quite a bit younger than his brothers.
I believe there is strong evidence that there is a genetic aspect to PCOS and that under the right conditions they will then get the disorder.
In my case I believe that the syptoms started to show when I was 17, but I was not diagnosed until I was 19 because like many others my first gyno put me on birth control to mask the syptoms. I also think that the birth control intensified my hormonal inbalance and made matters worse.

I had no problems with periods and such until after I had my son at 20, I have always been a big cyster the same as most of my family, no one in my family has had problems getting pregnant. In my case I feel the pill had a lot to do with it as DS is a "pill" baby. There are no girls apart from my nan on dad's side of the family and my female cousins have not had trouble falling pregnant either.I'm the odd one out on both sides of the family.

I believe PCOS is most likely genetic. I believe that if you are genetically prone to PCOS, you may or may not develop it. I think in some people the major hormone changes during puberty may trigger it to pop up, but in others it remains dormant. For some, it seems to appear later in life. This could possibly correspond with other hormonal changes, major life stress, or changes in diet/exercise.
Either way, I do believe there is a strong genetic component to it. I hope that in the near future they can find the gene and more information will be available.

I agree with Stacie. Most of the time you are genetically prone to something, it will not show until certain circumstances present themselves. IE Hormone shifts, (prg., starting your period).

Where did you hear this? All of my relatives that I would have gotten it from are on my mom's side.
